Category I: The Foundational Questions
1. Tell us about yourself
What they want to know: They want a quick summary of your journey, not your life
story. They are checking if your profile matches their firm's work.
How to Answer (The Present-Past-Future Formula):
Present: "I am currently a final-year law student at IPEM Law Academy, specializing
in [e.g., Criminal Law/Business Law].”
Past: "Prior to this, during my internships at [Firm Name] and [NGO Name], I
developed a strong interest in [specific area, e.g., Corporate Litigation/Research]
where I assisted on matters like [mention one task]."
Future: "I am now looking to leverage my research and drafting skills in a dynamic
environment like yours, which is why I am excited about the opportunity at this job
fair."
2. Why do you want to work with our firm/organization?
What they want to know: They want to see if you have done your homework or if you
are just applying everywhere.
How to Answer: Mention something specific about them. "I have been following the
work your firm did in the [Landmark Case Name] and I admire your expertise in
[Practice Area]. I believe my skills in legal research align perfectly with the high
standards your firm is known for."
3. What area of law are you interested in, and why?
What they want to know: Your passion and whether you have a clear career path.
How to Answer: Be honest but flexible. "I am deeply interested in Constitutional
Law because I am passionate about public interest litigation. However, as a fresher, I
am eager to gain a strong foundation in litigation/corporate practice and am open to
learning different areas."
Category II: Skills & Practical Knowledge
4. Describe your experience with legal research. What databases have you used?
What they want to know: Can you find case laws and statutes efficiently?
How to Answer: "I am proficient in using databases like SCC Online and Manupatra.
During my internship, I was tasked with researching the applicability of [Specific
Section] in a particular case, where I had to find 5 relevant Supreme Court judgments.
I enjoy the process of digging through commentaries to find the exact citation
needed."
5. Have you ever drafted any legal documents? Which ones?
What they want to know: Your exposure to the practical side of law.
How to Answer: "Yes, during my internships, I have assisted in drafting plaints,
written statements, and legal notices. I also have experience drafting contracts like
Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). I am careful with language and pay close
attention to the specific facts of the case."
6. How do you handle a heavy workload and tight deadlines?
What they want to know: Law is a high-pressure field; they want to know if you can
handle it.
How to Answer: "I prioritize my tasks by urgency and importance. For example,
during my college moots, I had to balance court preparation with my intern
assignments. I create a checklist and ensure I communicate with my supervisor if I
foresee any delays, but I usually manage my time to meet deadlines."
Category 3: Behavioural & Situational
7. Tell me about a time you faced a difficult situation during an internship and how
you resolved it.
What they want to know: Your problem-solving skills and attitude.
How to Answer (STAR Method):
Situation: "My senior asked me to find a case law on a very niche point by the end of
the day."
Task: "I couldn't find it on the usual databases initially."
Action: "I decided to look through a physical textbook in the library to understand the
principle better, which gave me the right keywords to search with. I also asked a
fellow intern who had worked on a similar area."
Result: "I eventually found the case and learned the importance of using secondary
sources when databases fall short."
8. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the legal profession today?
What they want to know: Whether you are aware of the real world.
How to Answer: "I believe the impact of technology and AI on traditional legal work
is a major challenge and opportunity. While it can automate drafting and research, it
also requires lawyers to adapt and focus more on strategy and client relations, which
technology cannot replace."
9. How do you explain complex legal concepts to a client who has no legal
background?
What they want to know: Communication skills and client-handling ability.
How to Answer: "I try to avoid jargon. For instance, instead of saying 'res ipsa
loquitur,' I would explain to a client that 'the facts are so clear that they speak for
themselves, like if a patient wakes up with an instrument inside them after surgery.' I
believe simplifying the law builds trust."
10. How do you handle feedback or criticism of your work?
What they want to know: Are you coachable?
How to Answer: "I actually welcome feedback because it helps me grow. When a senior
corrected a draft I wrote, I made notes of the changes so I wouldn't repeat the mistake. I
see criticism as guidance, not as a personal attack."

11. You have a gap in your academics/experience. Can you explain that?
What they want to know: Honesty and how you used that time.
How to Answer: "Yes, there was a gap of [X months/years]. During that period, I was
preparing for [e.g., Judicial Services Exams / Dealing with a family situation]. It was
also a time of self-study where I deepened my knowledge of substantive law, and I am
now fully focused and committed to starting my professional career."
12. You don't have much internship experience. How will you compensate for that?
What they want to know: Your hunger to learn.
How to Answer: "While my number of internships may be less, I have ensured that
wherever I went, I absorbed as much as possible. I have also supplemented this by
taking online certificate courses in [e.g., Cyber Law] and participating in moot courts,
which honed my research and public speaking skills. I am a quick learner and ready to
put in the hard work."
13. What is your USP? Why should we hire you over the other 50 candidates?
What they want to know: Your self-awareness.
How to Answer: "My USP is my blend of technical accuracy and proactive attitude. I
don't just wait for tasks; during my last internship, I compiled a list of recent
amendments to the [Specific Act] and shared it with my team because I noticed it was
relevant to our ongoing cases. I combine research skills with initiative."

14. What is the latest important judgment you have read?
What they want to know: Do you keep up with current legal developments?

interpretation of [Specific Article/Section] particularly interesting because it clarified
[explain the impact briefly]."
15. Do you have any questions for us?
What they want to know: Are you engaged? (Never say "No.")
How to Answer: Ask smart questions.
"What does a typical day look like for a junior associate at your firm?"
"How does the firm support the professional development and learning of fresh
graduates?"
"What are the qualities that differentiate a good intern from a great one in your team?"
