Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process in mechanical engineering transforms raw materials into final products through various steps, including design, material selection, and production techniques. It is classified into primary, secondary, joining, surface finishing, and processes to enhance material properties, each serving distinct purposes such as shaping, assembling, improving surface quality, and enhancing material characteristics. Examples of each process include casting, milling, welding, polishing, and heat treatment.

Manufacturing process: -

In mechanical engineering, the manufacturing process refers to

the steps through which raw materials are transformed into a final
product. It involves a combination of design, material selection,
and various production techniques to create functional and
economically viable products.
Classification of manufacturing process:

1. Primary Manufacturing Processes

2. Secondary Manufacturing Processes
3. Joining Processes
4. Surface Finishing Processes
5. Processes to Enhance Desired Material Properties

1. Primary Manufacturing Processes

Convert raw materials into basic usable forms (semi-finished
products).
Examples:
Casting – Molten metal poured into a mold to form a shape
Molding – Shaping plastics or composites.
Forming – Deforming materials (e.g., forging, rolling, extrusion).
Powder Metallurgy – Pressing and sintering powdered metals.

Purpose: Create basic shapes from raw materials.

2. Secondary Manufacturing Processes
Shape the semi-finished products into final dimensions by removing
material.
Examples:
Turning – Using a lathe for cylindrical shapes.
Milling – Removing material with a rotating cutter.
Drilling – Creating round holes.
Grinding – Finishing surface and tight tolerance.
Broaching/Shaping – Creating intricate profiles.

Purpose: Achieve precise shape, size, and surface finish.

3. Joining Processes
Used to assemble multiple parts into a final product.
Examples:
Welding – Melting and fusing materials.
Brazing/Soldering – Joining using filler metals.
Riveting/Bolting – Mechanical fasteners.
Adhesive Bonding – Chemical-based joining.

Purpose: Create strong or detachable joints between parts.

4. Surface Finishing Processes

Improve surface quality, appearance, and protective properties of
the part.
Examples:
Polishing/Buffing – Smooth and shiny surface.
Painting/Coating – Decorative and corrosion-resistant layers.
Electroplating – Applying a thin metallic layer via electrolysis.
Anodizing – Oxide layer formation (mostly on aluminum).
Powder Coating – Durable finish using dry powder.

Purpose: Enhance appearance, protect against corrosion,

reduce friction.

5. Processes to Enhance Desired Material Properties

Change internal structure or composition to improve mechanical or
thermal behavior.
Examples:
Heat Treatment – Annealing, hardening, tempering, normalizing.
Cold Working / Work Hardening – Strengthening via deformation.
Surface Hardening – Carburizing, nitriding (hard outer layer).
Alloying – Adding elements to improve properties.
Cryogenic Treatment – Deep cooling for stability and wear
resistance.

Purpose: Improve strength, hardness, ductility, corrosion

resistance, and durability.
