Cell Structure & Function (Easy Explanation Notes)

1. Cell Theory
• All living things are made of cells.

• Cells are the smallest units of life.

• All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.

2. Definition of Cell
• A cell is the smallest unit of life that can perform all basic life processes.

3. Examples of Cells
• Amoeba

• Plant stem cells

• Red blood cells

• Nerve cells

• Bacteria

4. Types of Cells
• Prokaryotic Cells – Simple cells without nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Example:
Bacteria.

• Eukaryotic Cells – Complex cells with nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Examples:
Plant and animal cells.

5. Cell Membrane
• Outer boundary of the cell.

• Controls movement of substances in and out of the cell.

6. Cell Wall
• Present mainly in plant cells and bacteria.

• Provides protection and support.

7. Nucleus
• Control center of the cell.

• Contains DNA and controls cell activities.

8. Nuclear Membrane
• Double layered membrane surrounding the nucleus.

• Contains pores that allow materials to enter and exit.

9. Chromosomes
• Structures made of DNA.

• Carry genetic information and traits.

10. Nucleolus
• Found inside the nucleus.

• Helps in making ribosomes.

11. Cytoplasm
• Jelly-like substance inside the cell.

• All organelles are suspended in it.

12. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

• Network of membranes that transport materials.

• Rough ER contains ribosomes.

• Smooth ER does not contain ribosomes.

13. Ribosomes
• Small structures that produce proteins.

• Found floating in cytoplasm or attached to rough ER.

14. Mitochondria
• Known as the powerhouse of the cell.

• Produces energy by breaking down nutrients.

15. Golgi Bodies

• Modify, package, and transport proteins.

16. Lysosomes
• Contain digestive enzymes.

• Break down waste materials and old cell parts.

17. Vacuoles
• Storage sacs for water, food, and waste.
• Help maintain shape in plant cells.

18. Chloroplast
• Found only in plant cells.

• Contain chlorophyll and perform photosynthesis.
