Q. No CO QUESTIONS MARKS
Design a Standalone Solar PV-based Inverter System for your home.
This system must serve as an uninterruptible power source for Critical
Loads, ensuring work can continue during a power outage.
The system must be sized to support the following critical appliances:
Critical Load Quantity Power Rating (Watts) Usage per Day
Laptop 1 65W 6 Hours
LED Bulb 2 15W each 4 Hours
Ceiling Fan 3 75W each 8 Hours
LED TV 1 100W 3 Hours
Mixer Grinder 1 800W 0.1 Hours
Perform the following design calculations to determine the
1 CO1 specifications for your hardware: 3 Marks
1. Total Load Analysis: Calculate the total daily energy
consumption in Watt-hours (Wh).
2. Inverter Sizing: Calculate the minimum Wattage (W) rating the
inverter must have to power all these appliances simultaneously.
(Assume a 20% safety margin for surge currents).
3. Storage Design (8-Hour Autonomy): Determine the required
battery capacity in Wh to keep these critical loads running for 8
hours without any sunlight.
4. Solar Array Sizing: Calculate how many 450W Solar Panels
are required to recharge the system daily, assuming 5 Peak Sun
Hours and a system efficiency of 80%.
Design a fully autonomous, standalone Solar PV system capable of
powering the lecture hall AB2 405 during standard operating hours
without any reliance on the utility grid.
Conduct a site audit of lecture hall AB2 405 and complete a
comprehensive system design and financial feasibility report.
Perform a physical count and identify the power ratings for all electrical
components in the hall.
1. Lighting Loads: Count all LED/fluorescent fixtures and determine
their total wattage.
2. Plug points: Identify loads typically connected to plug points
(Laptops, Projectors, Audio Systems).
3. Motor Loads: Identify any ceiling fans or ventilation units.
4. Operating Profile: Calculate the total energy (Wh) required for the
fixed operating window: 07:55 AM to 04:40 PM (8 hours and 45
minutes).
Based on your audit, determine the specifications for the following:
Solar PV Array: Total number of panels required (assume 540W
panels).
Battery Bank: Capacity required for 1 day of autonomy (to cover
cloudy days).
2 Inverter/MPPT Charger: Sizing based on the peak simultaneous 7 Marks
load (Max Watts).
Using current market rates for components, calculate the following:
1. Total Capital Investment (Cinv): Sum of costs for Panels, Batteries,
Inverter, Structure, and Installation.
2. Annual Savings: Calculate the cost of electricity saved based on a
local tariff (e.g., ₹8.00 per unit/kWh).
3. Payback Period: Calculate how many years it will take for the
savings to equal the initial investment.
Total Investment Cost
Payback Period (Years) =
Annual Electricity Savings
The submission report must consist of
A detailed Load Table for AB2 405.
Single Line Diagram of the proposed PV system.
Final cost sheet and a brief conclusion on whether this
investment is recommended.
Market Values for Grading (reference)
Solar Panels: approx. ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 per kW.
Battery (LiFePO4): approx. ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per kWh.
Hybrid Inverter: approx. ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 for a 3kVA system.
