Introduction:
A dynamometer, or "dyno," is a device that measures force, torque, or power
produced by an engine, motor, or other rotating prime mover. By measuring torque
and rotational speed (RPM) simultaneously, it calculates power output. It is
essential for testing engine performance, durability, and emissions.
Types of Dynamometers:
Split this into 2 main categories:

1- Engine dynamo:
It tests the engines of the vehicles to measure the engine power output directly,
thus avoiding any transmission or driveline losses by measuring the resistive
force needed to hold engine shaft or flywheel at a preset rotational speed.

How It Works
• The engine is removed from the car and mounted on a test bench
• It is connected to the dynamometer shaft
• The engine runs → produces torque
• The dynamometer applies controlled resistance (load)
• Sensors measure:
o Torque
o Speed (RPM)
• Then, the power is calculated

Main Components

• Test Bed (Frame): Holds the engine securely

• Coupling Shaft: Connects engine to dyno
• Load Device: (absorbs power)
o Hydraulic
o Eddy current
o Electric
• Sensors: Measure torque & speed
• Control System: Adjusts load and records data

Types of Engine Dynamometers

Hydraulic Dynamometer → uses fluid resistance

Eddy Current Dynamometer → uses magnetic fields

Electric Dynamometer → can also generate electricity

Advantages
• Very accurate measurements
• Full control over test conditions
• Ideal for engine development and research
Disadvantages
• Engine must be removed from vehicle
• Expensive setup
• Doesn’t include drivetrain losses (so not “real-world” like chassis dyno)

Applications
• Engine design & testing
• Performance tuning
• Fuel consumption analysis
• Emission testing

2-Chassis Dynamometer
A Chassis Dynamometer is a testing device used to measure the power, torque, and
performance of a vehicle at the wheels, without removing the engine.
Working Principle
The vehicle is placed on rollers and operated as if it road.
• The wheels rotate the rollers
• The dynamometer applies resistance (load)
• Sensors measure speed and torque
• Power is calculated based on these values

Main Components
• Rollers: Support the vehicle wheels
• Load System: Applies resistance (hydraulic or electric)
• Sensors: Measure torque and speed
• Cooling Fans: Simulate airflow during driving
• Control System: Records and controls test data

Advantages
• No need to remove the engine
• Simulates real driving conditions
• Quick and easy setup
• Useful for tuning and diagnostics

Disadvantages
• Less accurate than engine dynamometer
• Includes drivetrain losses (gearbox, tires, etc.)
• Results affected by tire condition and setup
Applications
• Vehicle performance testing
• Engine tuning (ECU tuning)
• Fuel efficiency testing
• Emission testing
• Motorsport applications

Core Working Principles

• Absorption Unit: The engine connects to a rotor inside a housing. The dyno
creates drag (braking torque) on this rotor using hydraulic, magnetic, or
frictional force.
• Measuring Force: The housing attempts to rotate with the shaft but is
restrained by a torque arm connected to a sensitive scale or load cell, which
measures the force.
• Data Calculation: Sensors measure rotational speed and torque. The system
uses these values to calculate horsepower and torque, often using a formula
like
• Engine Load Control: In water-brake dynamometers, water is introduced to
create resistance. As the engine speeds up, more water flows, increasing the
load and allowing the operator to map the engine's power across different
RPMs

Testing Procedure
The following steps are followed when conducting a dynamometer test:
1. The engine or vehicle is securely mounted on the dynamometer.
2. All sensors (torque, speed, temperature) are properly connected.
3. The control system is initialized and calibrated.
4. The engine is started and allowed to reach normal operating conditions.
5. The dynamometer applies a controlled load to the engine or wheels.
6. Measurements of torque and rotational speed (RPM) are recorded.
7. Power output is calculated using the recorded data.
8. The results are analyzed and documented for performance evaluation.

Safety Considerations
When operating a dynamometer, the following safety precautions must be
observed:
• Ensure the engine or vehicle is securely mounted to prevent movement
during testing.
• Keep a safe distance from rotating parts such as shafts and rollers.
• Use proper cooling systems to avoid engine overheating.
• Regularly check all sensors and connections before starting the test.
• Avoid loose clothing or objects near moving components.
• Ensure proper ventilation to prevent accumulation of exhaust gases.
• Follow all operating procedures and only allow trained personnel to conduct
the test.
Conclusion:
Dynamometers are essential tools in automotive engineering, providing accurate
measurement of engine and vehicle performance. Engine dynamometers offer
precise control for research and development, while chassis dynamometers
simulate real-world driving conditions. Together, they play a vital role in
improving efficiency, performance, and reliability of modern vehicles.
