Points and Crossings
How does a
train
change its
way from
one track
to other?
It is not as
simple as
those
roadway
junctions.
3
Note: train wheels always follow the inner side of the rail…
Flange of
wheel -
inner side
of railway
track
We use this knowledge to design the points-crossings-turnouts. Or
simply, with moving rail parts, we make the wheels to follow any
direction we want.
4
Points, crossings & turnouts
• Point is a tapered device that is used to divert the wheels of a train
from one track to another track.
• Points are parts of moveable rails.
• Crossing is the gap between moveable and immovable rails. (This is
not the railway crossing, where a road crosses a railway track).
• A set of points and crossings is called as a ‘turnout’.

8
Points and Crossings: significance
• Improper functioning can lead to
• Derailing of train
• Movement of train on a wrong track
leading to collision

Assignment 2: Design of turnout
(will post in Teams)
Draw this turnout (points-crossings) neatly. (You can
ignore those capital single letters like A, B etc). This picture
is in Textbook (Sathish/Agarwal), Fig 14.1 (1.a only)
