DATA VISUALIZATION ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT 1:

Write a 2 page report and a pipeline diagram. Given a real-world dataset (Example: sales,
healthcare, traffic, or climate):

1. Identify each stage of the visualization pipeline:

• Data acquisition
• Data cleaning
• Data transformation
• Visual mapping
• Rendering
• Interpretation

2. For each stage:

• State inputs
• State outputs
• Identify possible errors or bias
ASSIGNMENT 2:

Give a structured table and one page report. Choose two domains - Education & Healthcare.

For each:

1. Describe the domain problem


2. Identify:

• Data types (categorical, ordinal, quantitative)


• Attribute types

3. Abstract user goals into tasks:

• Lookup
• Compare
• Detect trend
• Find outliers

ASSIGNMENT 3:

Use a formal framework to analyze visualization design. Analyze the below dashboard
Analyze using Munzner’s nested model:

1. Domain problem & data


2. Task abstraction
3. Visual encoding & interaction
4. Algorithm & implementation

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

• Where does the visualization succeed?


• Where does it fail?
• Which level causes the biggest problem?
ASSIGNMENT 4:

Demonstrate features detected instantly by the human visual system.

Analyse the below visualization and:

1. Identify violations of Gestalt principles:

• Proximity
• Similarity
• Continuity
• Closure

2. How can you redesign it using:

• Visual hierarchy
• Alignment
• White space

Write a before and after comparison for two pages and explanation of each design decision.
