Keywords: Social media, language engagement, language learning, education.
BACKGROUND
Traditional language learning environments have long been confined to classrooms
featuring textbooks, lectures, and structured curriculum. However, these classical
methodologies often fall short in actively engaging students and promoting the practical use of
language in real-world contexts. However, it can be restrictive and may not fully engage
students or prepare them for practical, real-world language use. For example, in a classroom
setting, students might spend hours learning verb and noun, but they may not learn how to
navigate a conversation at a local market or understand colloquial expressions used by native
speakers. This gap between academic knowledge and practical application can lead to a lack
of confidence and reluctance to engage in conversations outside the classroom. Traditional
methods often rely on repetitive exercises that can become monotonous, leading to
disengagement among learners.
On the other hand, social media provides a more dynamic and interactive platform for
language learning. It offers access to a vast array of resources and real-time interaction with
native speakers. Social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and language
exchange sites can expose learners to the language as it is used in everyday, casual
conversation. They also provide opportunities for learners to practice their skills in a less
formal, more engaging environment. Social Media's ubiquity and interactive nature propose an
educational paradigm shift, where these online platforms could facilitate a more immersive and
participatory form of language learning.
Through social media, language learners can practice their skills by chatting with native
speakers, watching videos in their target language, and joining language learning groups. It's
not just about learning words; it's about experiencing language in real-life situations and
building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. Social media opens doors to
endless possibilities for language engagement and learning, making the journey fun,
interactive, and accessible to everyone.
Technological advances and social media have paved the way that one can learn and
teach a foreign language. As technology has developed and social media has attracted attention,
teachers have been given more opportunities to utilize technology to enhance teaching a foreign
language. There has been a general positive inclination toward technology-based education
since it is time-saving and much more interactive. In recent years, students’ engagement is
highly impacted by social media. Engagement, on the other hand, is perceived as an important
part of the process of learning. Social media provides language learners with authentic
language practice opportunities, access to diverse cultural content, and the ability to engage
with native speakers worldwide, fostering language skills in a real-world context.
As a result, this study will evaluate earlier research that used social media for purposes
including language learning. It seeks to give a thorough overview of how social media has been
used as a learning tool in the context of language acquisition, the impact of social media on
education, and the advantages that have been demonstrated by prior research. Based on the
above, the purpose of writing this article is to find out the impact of social media on language
engagement and learning
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This research uses a qualitative approach with literature review techniques, with the topic
is the impact of social media on language engagement and learning. The methodology section
outlines the approach in conducting the journal review to analyze social media platforms as
effective tools for language engagement and learning.
1) Data Collection
The research methodology begins with the establishment of clear selection criteria for
identifying relevant scholarly articles. These criteria include publications that investigate the
use of social media platforms in language education, focusing on aspects such as learner
engagement, language acquisition, and pedagogical strategies. Articles are selected based on
their relevance, credibility, and methodological To ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the
research literature, leading academic databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar were used
for the literature search. Keywords related to social media, language learning, and engagement
are employed to identify relevant studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The data used
in this study were taken from 16 articles discussing the use of social media in learning English
and the impact of social media on language engagement and learning.
2) Data Analysis
After collecting relevant scholarly articles through the journal review process, the next step
involves analyzing the data. Firstly, the titles and abstracts of the articles are reviewed to check
their relevance to the research objectives. Articles closely related to the research focus,
researchers are focusing more on how social media can be used in language education. Next, a
thorough analysis of the selected articles was conducted to identify the main body. This
qualitative analysis categorizes and organizes the findings based on emerging themes related
to social media use in language learning. These themes may include that social media platforms
impact in learning foreign languages, how social media platforms facilitate language
engagement and the challenges associated with leveraging social media for language
engagement. By interpreting the findings from the reviewed articles, this analysis aims to
provide a clear understanding of the impact of social media on language engagement and
learning.
INTRODUCTION
Social media refers to online platforms and applications that enable users to create,
share, and interact with content in virtual communities and networks. These platforms facilitate
various forms of communication, including text, images, videos, and live streams, allowing
users to connect with others globally and engage in conversations on a wide range of topics.
According to (Erzad & Suciati, 2018), social media can help students hone their English skills
in the following areas: The four skills are listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
Additionally, it has been found that students in the millennial period use social media to
enhance the quality of their English because it is entertaining, fascinating, simple to use, and
instructive.
Social media has become an integral aspect of our daily existence, it has become an
essential part of our lives, allowing us to connect with others regardless of where we are or
what time it is. On social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp,
YouTube, etc., everyone can upload photos and write captions and give each other comments.
They can also upload live videos and video blogs (vlogs). By using social media, people can
hone their language skills such as speaking, writing, listening, reading, and language
components such as vocabulary, grammar, etc. In the teaching and learning process in the
pandemic era, social media can be used as an interesting learning media. This can attract
students' attention to learning activities that they are not aware of.
In the EFL context, the use of social media provides some opportunities to develop
students' English language skills. It is the fact that English is one of the languages that mostly
used in social media, because English is known as international languages that is used all over
the world to communicate each other. English in Indonesia is used by people especially the
students as the foreign language, where the students will get English and learn English in just
certain places like schools, courses, or universities as one of the available subjects in that
places. English Learners use their mobile phone in which social media to communicate each
other and they believe that mobile learning can facilitate them to learn anywhere and anytime
(Ayuningtyas, 2018). This paper will evaluate earlier research that used social media for
purposes including language learning. It seeks to give a thorough overview of the impact social
media platforms on education and how social media has been used as a learning tool in the
context of language acquisition.
1. What is the impact of social media on education?
Social media has fundamentally shifted the dynamics of education, transforming it from
a primarily passive experience to an interactive and engaging journey for English as a Foreign
Language (EFL) learners. As an essential tool for information and communication, social
media supports collaboration and active involvement, enhancing the learning process across
emotional, cognitive, and agent participation dimensions outside the traditional classroom
setting (Wang et al., 2022).
Social media has been an important element in education because of its ability to
enhance communication and collaboration. It serves as a dynamic platform where students and
teachers can get involved in real-time discussions, share the latest information and provide
feedback, which can significantly improve learning results and increase student engagement1.
In addition, social media offers a wide array of easily accessed educational resources, including
informational content, videos and podcasts. These resources can be shared and used through
various social media platforms, making education easier and more affordable for everyone.
However, the integration of social media in education also brings challenges that need
to be addressed carefully. The issue of privacy is of primary importance, as social media
platforms are public and may not offer enough security to protect sensitive information,
creating risks for educators and students. The potential for cyberbullying and harassment is
another serious issue, requiring caution to protect students from such threats. Social media can
be a distraction as well, and educators must find a balance between capitalizing on the
educational advantages and mitigating the disruptions it can cause.
Understanding the impact of social media on instruction is basic for educated decision-
making and upgraded instructing and learning hones. The impact of social media on education
can be seen in various forms, both positive and negative. This digital landscape has crossed
boundaries, reshaping the way we interact, share and express ourselves. In this paper, we will
explore the profound impact of social media on education.
1) Negative Impact of Social Media Education
• Educational Challenges and Disruption: Social media platforms create considerable
distractions for students, hindering their focus and productivity. The constant stream of
notifications, endless feed scrolling, and the constant temptation of social interaction
takes students away from their academic responsibilities. As a result, students may
delay, find it difficult to concentrate, and experience a decrease in academic
performance. Finishing assignments, learning efficiently, and actively engaging in
classroom activities becomes a difficult task in the midst of these distractions. As such,
the influence of pervasive social media can impede students' educational progress and
block their ability to achieve academically.
• Misinformation and Academic Integrity Concerns: Social media has become a great
place for the spread of false information. With fake news and rumors easily shared
across social media platforms, people are often misdirected and leading to confusion.
Exposure to content that is inaccurate or biased can distort students' understanding of
academic subjects, leading to misconceptions and errors in reasoning. Also, the ease of
copying and pasting information from social media sources without appropriate
attribution can contribute to plagiarism and the ethical dilemma in academic settings,
which compromises students' academic integrity and eases confidence in their
educational achievements.
2) Positive Impact of Social Media Education
• Access to Academic Content and Resources: Social media platforms like Facebook,
YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and educational blogs give students at the school level
access to a wide variety of educational materials, from videos to articles, that encourage
independent learning. This accessibility empowers students to enhance classroom
lessons, explore specialized subjects, and deeper their understanding of academic
topics. By providing additional resources beyond the curriculum, social media
platforms allow students to learn at their own pace, according to their own individual
learning styles. This flexibility encourages independent learning and increases students'
academic progress, providing them with valuable knowledge and skills for success in
and out of the classroom.
• Improved Communication and Collaboration: Social media platforms allow
students at the school level to communicate and collaborate with their classmates,
teachers, and fellow peers outside of the traditional classroom. Messaging apps, group
chats and an online discussion forum provide a means for students to ask questions,
share ideas and collaboration on projects in real time. This improved communication
promotes a sense of community among students, encourages student-to-student
learning, and facilitates teamwork, despite physical distances or time constraints.
• Creative Engagement: Social media platforms empower students at the school level
to confidently express themselves and engage with educational content in innovative
ways. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and blogging websites allow students to
display their creativity through art, videos, writing and multimedia projects. By having
their work and ideas shared with a wider audience, students can receive feedback, get
recognition and inspire others. In addition, challenges, contests and interactives on
social media encourages students to actively participate in learning activities and
explore new ways to expressed themselves creatively.
2. How Social Media Platforms Facilitate Language Engagement and Learning?
Social media platforms facilitate language learning by providing opportunities for
communication, information sharing, and engagement. They offer effective learning tools such
as automated learning and visualization techniques. Social media platforms can be used to
teach students and improve their language skills, particularly in writing and vocabulary. The
use of social media in language learning has been found to enhance students' achievement and
performance. Social learning may be referred to as active learning, in which the students
engage at their own speed actively in their own learning rather than passively processing data
in the classroom that they mostly recall before the test. Due to features such as sharing with
comments, livestreaming, or group sharing, the information provided by social media platforms
excites students to a different level. This new style of blended learning provides the students
with an all-round experience and offers a lot of flexibility to the students as they do not want
to sit all the time in the class. This generates convenience and availability, which are considered
the social media platforms facilitate language engagement.
Social networking sites can connect people and ideas instantaneously across big distances.
Social networking tools can improve student engagement when used correctly, they can
connect students to content experts, find online classroom lessons, and help them build online
personnel or establish their brand community (Lata & Gupta,2021). Some of the most famous
social media platforms, which can be facilitated in to formal learning include the following.
1) Facebook ([Link])

be a powerful tool for enhancing both receptive (reading and listening) and productive
(writing and speaking) skills. For instance, students can engage with multimedia
content in the target language, such as watching videos or reading articles, and then
discuss their thoughts in the comments section. This not only improves comprehension
but also gives them a chance to practice writing.
• Real-world Language Exposure: Facebook provides exposure to real-world language
use, which is essential for learners to understand how the language functions outside of
the textbook context. Following public figures, joining groups related to their interests,
and interacting with native speakers can immerse students in the language as it is used
in everyday life.
• Motivation and Engagement: The interactive nature of Facebook can increase
students’ motivation and engagement. By integrating multimedia elements like videos,
audio clips, and interactive quizzes, teachers can create a more dynamic learning
experience. This multimedia approach caters to various learning styles and keeps the
content engaging, which is crucial for sustaining students’ interest in the language.
2) YouTube ([Link]
YouTube is a great resource for finding information, entertainment, and education. Users
can search for videos on any topic using keywords, and can also subscribe to channels and
create playlists of their favorite videos. YouTube is not only a platform that individuals share,
upload, comment on videos; but also teachers and learners can use it in effective ways for
language learning processes. It can be used in formal learning processes in a number of ways:
• Visual and Interactive Learning: The visual nature of YouTube videos can aid
comprehension, especially for complex grammatical concepts or pronunciation. For
language learners, this means they can see facial expressions, body language, and
cultural contexts that accompany spoken language, making the learning experience
more engaging and effective.
• Subtitles and Transcripts: Many YouTube videos come with subtitles or transcripts,
which can be an excellent tool for reading practice and vocabulary building. Subtitles
can help learners understand grammar and sentence structure. By reading and listening
at the same time, learners can see how sentences are constructed and how grammar
rules are applied in real-life communication. Learners can also use these features to
listen and read simultaneously, which supports the development of both listening and
reading skills.
• Language Learning Channels: There are a lot of channels dedicated to teaching
languages. These channels often provide structured lessons, grammar explanations,
vocabulary lists, and language learning tips, which can be a great supplement to formal
education. Learners also can improve their listening skills by watching videos, their
speaking skills by repeating after speakers, and their writing skills by engaging in the
comments section.

photos, videos and messages with their followers. It was launched in 2010 and has since
become one of the most widely used social media platforms across the globe. The app allows
users to upload media that can be edited with filters and organized by hashtags and
geographical tagging. Specific applications in the formal learning environment may include
the following:
• Improve Writing Skills: Instagram provides an authentic context for students to
practice writing. By creating captions for their images and videos, students engage in
meaningful writing exercises that reflect real-life communication. This practice helps
them to apply the language in a practical setting, which can improve their writing
fluency and accuracy.
• Multimodal Literacy: Instagram provides a variety of content in different languages,
enabling learners to practice language outside the traditional classroom setting. The
platform’s multimodal literacy techniques cater to its specific genre of posts, combining
images, videos, text, hashtags, and geotags to convey meaning. This helps learners
understand how different linguistic resources are used together to communicate
effectively.
• Engagement with Native Content: Following native speakers and engaging with their
content allows learners to see the language in action. This can improve reading
comprehension as learners navigate through posts, stories, and comments, interpreting
the language as it is used by native speakers.
4) WhatsApp ([Link]
WhatsApp is a popular messaging application that allows users to send text messages, make
voice and video calls, share media files, and more. It offers functionality for group chat and
conference calls as well. Unlike traditional classroom learning, which is often one-way and
reactive, WhatsApp is much more dynamic and proactive. Students can use this application in
a number of ways:
• Group Chats: WhatsApp groups can be used for class discussions, where students can
share insights, ask questions, and provide peer support. This collaborative environment
encourages active use of the language and helps in building confidence. Students can
also go on conference calls, engaging in conference calls can help students become
comfortable with speaking in a group setting, which can be beneficial for language
learners who may need to use the language in meetings or public speaking.

are unable to attend class physically, WhatsApp enables teachers to conduct virtual
lessons, share lecture materials, and provide feedback on assignments, ensuring
continuity in learning. Students also can engage in conversations with teachers via text
messages or voice messages, practicing their writing and speaking skills in a casual
setting.
5) Blogs
Blogs Web blogs are also reported to be a form of social media. Many people have created
their own blogs and use them to write about everything from news to their perception of certain
issues. They encourage readers to reply by adding or posting comments on their blogs. Blogs
cover a variety of topics and are reported to be helpful in improving reading speed, vocabulary,
and promoting the use of correct grammar and improving the reading comprehension of
language learners. Blogs can be used in different ways for various purposes. For example,
beginners by referencing language-specific blogs can learn new ideas about how people use
blogs to interact with each other. It is also helpful to learn new vocabulary in different modern
contexts at any given moment. The language of blogs is not intended for advanced readers, as
some experts state that this language is simple and straightforward and blogs are a resource for
talking to casual readers (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010).
CONCLUSION
The utilization of social media, in this case Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp
and Blogs website, has a positive impact on language learning. Language learning that utilizes
social media can be presented in an attractive and effective way, so that students prefer
