URINARY CATHETERIZATION

Urinary catheterization involves inserting a flexible tube (catheter) through the urethra
or abdominal wall into the bladder to drain urine.

PURPOSE :

• To relieve bladder distention


• To obtain a sterile specimen
• To empty bladder
• To delivery or abdominal surgery

ARTICLE :

• Flash light
• Basin with warm water, soap , wash
cloth, towel.
• Disposable gloves
• Antiseptic solution
• Sterile saline
• Adhesive tape and scissors
• Lubricant
• Tray with :
▪ Sterile gloves
▪ Sterile towels
▪ Small Bowl
▪ Kidney tray
▪ Cotton swab
▪ Catheter ( male : 16 to 18 french, female : 14 to 16 french )
▪ Artery forceps
▪ Dissecting forceps
▪ Sterile syringe 20ml

PROCEDURE :

• Check the physician order


• Identify the patient
• Explain the procedure to the patient
• Provide privacy to patient
• Give the proper position to patient
• Female : Dorsal recumbent with knees flexed and thighs externally
rotated
• Male : supine position with thigh slightly abducted.

• Wash perineal area with soap and water.

• Open the tray , pour antiseptic solution into Bowl


• Open cover of catheter and place in tray
• Open lubricant, squeeze and discard first drop after that, drop some on a sterile
gauze in the tray.
• Done sterile gloves
• Drape perineal area
• Lubricate tip of catheter

Female : use mondominant hand , carefully retract labia fully and expose
urethral meatus.
o Take sterile cotton swab dipped in antiseptic solution and clean perineal
area from clitoris towards anus
o Repeat with cotton swab dipped in normal saline in same sequence
Male : Grasp penis firmly below gland with mondominant hand
o Retract the foreskin and hold it
o Use sterile swabs dipped in antiseptic solution to clean meatus
o Repeat the cleaning using normal saline in same sequence

• Insert catheter for 15 to 25 cm in male and 2.5 to 5 cm in female if met with


resistance, twist catheter.
• Inflate balloon with sterile distilled water

• Pull catheter outward lightly to stability


• Connect catheter to urosac and tied to bed below level
• Fix catheter to thigh using adhesive tape
• Clean and replace the article
• Wash hand
• Record and report on patient chart
