Heat Transfer Analysis
Thermal Analysis
Thermal analysis is used to determine the temperature distribution, thermal gradient, heat
flow and other such thermal quantities in a structure/component.
Thermal analysis can be steady state or transient,
• Steady state – implies that the loading conditions have settled down to a steady level,
with little or no time dependency.
Example: An iron that has already reached the desired temperature.
• Transient – implies that the loading conditions that are changing with time.
Example: A casting in the process of cooling down from molten metal to solid.
Thermal Analysis
Thermal Loading Conditions:
Temperature: Regions of the model where temperature are known.
Convections: Surface where heat is transferred to (or from) surroundings by means of
convection. (film coefficient and the bulk temperature of the surrounding fluid)
i) Free or Natural convection ii) Forced convection
Heat flux: Surface where the heat flow rate per unit area is known.
Heat flow: Points where the heat flow rate is known.
Heat generation: Regions where the volumetric heat generation rate is known.
Radiation: Surfaces where heat transfer occurs by means of radiation. (Emissivity, Stefan
Boltzmann constant).
Problem Statement
Hot fluid is passing through a steel pipe of 50 mm outer diameter and thickness of 2 mm. Temperature of the
fluid is of 80oC and the thermal conductivity of pipe material is of 40 W/moC. Polyethylene based insulator of
thermal conductivity 0.1 W/moC is used as the insulator to avoid the heat loss and to maintain room
temperature at the outer surface of the pipe. Determine the thickness of the insulator to maintain the outer
temperature as of 30oC. Also consider teflon based insulator of thermal conductivity 0.35 W/moC in the place
of polyethylene and compare the temperature changes at the outer surface of pipe. Consider 30 mm as the
length of pipe for analysis. Room temperature is 26oC. Convection Film Coefficient of air is 40 W/m2 oC.
