Beyond It All

Zandile, a young traveler with eyes that see beyond
reality, arrives into a land she hopes will be a
place where dreams are manufactured into a lifestyle.
Her blinding enthusiastic nature fails to detect the
living condition of her environment. This gives her a
very unpleasant welcoming.
Scene 1
Setting: Delf Mall – market stalls
Characters: Zandile, Chante, Nyongo, Lusanda,
Khelephu, cable seller, taxi driver.

Cable guy
Cables! Cables! Android, iPhone! Cables chommie?

Taxi driver
Luzuko Delft! Delft Luzuko!

Cable guy
Nyongo I don’t have R2 today.

Plays ‘Wena by International Athi’ intro.

Zandile

(Disgustingly looking at Zandile, like she smells)

(Shocked by the high price)

While Zandile checks for more money. Nyongo slowly

approaches from the back. As he passes each seller,
everything becomes still as they put a blind fold on.
This is to highlight the ignorance and fear that

overcomes people living in violent areas. Everyone
becomes a bystander.

(Zandile expresses confusion as she doesn’t
understand Nyongo’s language)

Lusanda silently enjoys the show of Zandile being

overcome by fear.

Zandile’s expectations shatter from the inside out.

She trys to calm herself the only she knows how,
praying. Lusanda, the cable guy, and the taxi driver
quickly attend to Zandile as if they did not witness
the entire robbery.

Zandile struggles to respond choked by her heavy

breathing.

Zandile sobs like a hopeless child who lost her

parents at a big mall.

(Evil demeanor)

Lusanda burts out in laughter.

In the mist of it all. Chante, Zandile’s sister,

discovers her in a state of shock and freight.
Zandile’s absent-mindedness creates a distance
between her and Chante’s voice. Which in fact, was

Zandile slowly sits as a huge part of her is still

trying to comprehend what she has just experienced.

(watching herself in the mirror)

Zandile

Lusanda is interrupted while she’s busy with her

incantations when she hears her name through the
mirror.

Zandile

Zandile walks out leaving Chante confused and Lusanda

Setting: In the streets - Philippi

Characters: Zola, Zandile, Nyongo

(frustrated)

(relaxed)

Zola and all his current anxious thoughts instantly
fade away. He slowly takes a step to Zandile.

Zandile turns to find Zola creeping behind her. It

triggers her trauma from the recent incident.

Zola

Setting:
Charcters: Khelephu, Zola, Nyongo, Dignity

Zola and Nyongo hear a police siren followed by

dignity’s voice.

Dignity
Ah, mdoda amakhulu… We meet again. This time I’m
taking you with me.

Nyongo is hesitant and wants to run.

Dignity
Khanitsho ke, sizokudlala impuku nekati or are we
going to keep things civil?

The chase starts with Khelephu “assisting” Dignity to

catch the thugs. Plays ‘Woof Woof by Zola 7’. This
Tom and Jerry goes on until Zola catches Khelephu
alone and clears up this “misunderstanding.”

Zola
(threatening whisper while pointing the gun his head)
Yewena masaka! Kutheni ndizodlala uTom and Jerry nani
ngoku?

Khelephu struggles to respond.

Zola
Kanti why do I pay you xhego ndini? Okanye ufun’ucula

Zola lets Khelephu go to let him explain.

(coughing and catching his breath)

understood that proper respect as a man is gained
through proving yourself. He was just not willing to

they dig you into a deeper hole of comfortability.

The atmosphere tenses up for Khelephu as Dignity

walks to him. The sound of his boots are amplified by
the silence. Intensifying Khelephu’s blood pressure.

Dignity
You know Mr Magadla. Ndindedwa apha kulomhlaba
waseKapa, with no family. People look at me and see a
lonely man. Others celebrate with me in my luck
because I have no one to worry about. I don’t even
have a cat to put at risk from all cold hearted
criminals I’ve put behind bars. All their vengeance
comes back to me. I am my own risk. Though I have
wondered how it feels to carry such a burden. The
things I’d do to keep my children safe. The community
would come second. Though it takes away the purpose
of being a man of the law, rather that, than to take
away my bloodline. Wouldn’t you agree, constable
Magadla?

I’ll wait in the car.

Khelephu is left alone with his thoughts. And all he

could think about was his final words before Dignity
finally exposes his true nature to everyone he loved,
hated, and lied to.

Khelephu
It took me 10 years of serving to realise why I
became a policeman. It was never about justice or
protecting those who can’t protect themselves. It was
never even about my family. If it were I would never
have put their lives at risk working hand in hand
with criminals. The uncomfortable truth masked by
being a family man found its way to remind me that I
always had a choice.
(beat)

Zola and Nyongo walk in to discuss how Dignity almost

caught them. Zola is at the peak of frustration.

Zola

Nyongo stays silent.

Zola
Phendula nja.

Nyongo retaliates.

Nyongo
Rhaki nja wena Zola.
Zola is triggered and immediately sets his lapdog
straight.

Zola

Chante comes back to dance with them not knowing

what’s actually being discussed in her presence.

(trying to take Zola’s gun)

While Zola and Chante are fighting over the gun.

Nyongo is possed by Lusanda. He pulls out his gun and
points it at Chante. At the same time Zola forcefully
takes his from Chante.

Zola
Bek’intshiza phantsi.

Chante

Zola

Chante

(infuriated)

Chante

Lusanda

Looks at Lusanda and gets frightened.

Chante
I’ll come back tomorrow, I promise. I’ll buy more

The witch is frustrated at the limp leaving unscathed

after all her the work she’s been putting in for 3

detective Dignity enters.

(notices something on the floor)

Lusanda shrugs her shoulders.

Lusanda
(held back anger)

(evil laughing)

Scene 6
Setting: Lusanda’s tarven
Characters: Lusanda, Zandile, Chante, Zola, Nyongo,
Khelephu, Dignity.

After the tragic event that happened. Lusanda still

lives to see Chante come back to her tarven. And that
infuriates her. Her thoughts are suddenly disturbed
by a knock.

Lusanda
The shop is closed!

Zandile
Uxolo mama bendicela uvule.
(continues to knock)
Ndim uZandile. Kutsixiwe apha.

Lusanda drags herself to go open the door.

Zandile
Andqondanga ukuphazamisa ekuseni kangaka. I know you

home saying she’s coming to celebrate here.

(fast walks to Chante and hugs her)

Turns Chante to her.

(interrupts)
