Cable gland
Note: This shelf is designed for direct connection of trunk cables using cable glands inserted into the
cable entry ports as shown in above figure. Another method for securing trunk cables is the use of
optional rack mounted brackets. See instruction sheet 860 380 781 for using rack mounted brackets.
1. Loosely secure trunk cable to equipment rack upright approximately 3 inches (76 mm) below shelf,
using a cable tie, Mille-Tie * , or hook-and-loop strip. Leave approximately a 48-inch (2.1 m) length of
cable to route into shelf.
2. Trunk cables may enter shelf from either right side, left side, or rear apron. Carefully loop trunk cable
to rear of shelf on either side and then continue to feed cable over top of rear panel apron. Loosely
secure cable to rear of shelf as shown above, using a cable tie, Mille-Tie, or hook-and-loop strip.
3. Temporarily store slack fibers in shelf.
4. Remove plug from appropriate size opening in shelf to accommodate cable gland on trunk cable.
Select an opening on rear apron or either right or left side panel that will be most advantageous for
cable entry.
5. Completely loosen gland nut from cable gland.
6. Feed MPO connector(s) and subunit tube(s) through opening in shelf and temporarily coil fibers
loosely in fiber shelf.
7. Rotate gland nut as required to allow it to pass through the opening and enter shelf.
Note: It may be necessary to temporarily remove a plug from an adjacent opening to provide
sufficient clearance for gland nut to pass through.
8. Insert threaded body of cable gland into opening and tighten gland nut onto threaded section to
secure cable gland unit to shelf.

5. Completely loosen gland nut from cable gland.
6. Feed MPO connector(s) and subunit tube(s) through opening in shelf and temporarily coil fibers
loosely in fiber shelf.
7. Rotate gland nut as required to allow it to pass through selected opening and enter shelf.
Note: It may be necessary to temporarily remove a plug from an adjacent opening to provide
sufficient clearance for gland nut to be inserted through opening.
8. Insert threaded body of cable gland into opening and tighten gland nut onto threaded section to
secure cable gland unit to shelf.
Note: The two recommended methods (Method A and Method B) for routing fiber trunk cable from
sliding shelf to equipment rack are described below. Method B routing requires a minimum of 1U
open rack space above the 360G2-1U-IP shelf. The 360G2-2U-IP shelf does not have this
requirement.
Page 6

Method A
1. Working back from where trunk cable enters shelf (at cable gland), carefully loop cable over rear fiber
management bar and then to outside of shelf slide on opposite side of panel from cable entry point as
shown. Maintain the cable in as small of a radius as possible while not exceeding minimum bend
radius for the cable. Secure trunk cable to shelf slide in at least two places using cable ties, Mille-
Ties, or hook-and-loop strips threaded through slots and punches provided in rails. Do not secure
trunk cable to fiber management bar.
Note: Do not exceed minimum bend radius for fiber cable.
2. From shelf slide, route trunk cable to equipment rack and loosely secure cable to rack upright
approximately 3 inches (76 mm) above or below shelf, using a cable tie, Mille-Tie, or hook-and-loop
strip.
3. Verify that shelf retracts and extends fully before proceeding.
Method B
1. Working back from where trunk cable enters shelf (at cable gland), carefully dress cable toward
opposite side of shelf. Route trunk cable over slide rail, taking care to not exceed minimum bend
radius.
Method B
4. The above figure shows typical fiber loop for both Method A and Method B fiber routing when shelf
is retracted.

Overview
The dependence on fiber optic networks continue to grow in Data Centers as data rates
and network bandwidth demands are driven higher by network storage, virtualization, and
density. Data Center fiber networks are evolving and can assist with data center concerns
such as power, cooling, floor space, and equipment density storage and local area
networks can vary in size, architecture, and platform and may be centrally located or
scattered throughout a data center. The SYSTIMAX 360 UHD solution was created to
allow for maximum design flexibility while providing modular and scalable growth.
The 360 UHD solution is comprised of:
• SYSTIMAX 360 Ultra High Density Shelf and Modules
• SYSTIMAX 360 Modular Panel and MPO Modular Adapter Panel
• SYSTIMAX InstaPATCH® 360 Pre-Terminated Trunk Cables
• SYSTIMAX InstaPATCH® 360 Ruggedized Fanout Cables
• SYSTIMAX InstaPATCH® 360 Array Cords
• SYSTIMAX Fiber Optic Patch Cords
These components form the 360 UHD fiber solution for data center networks and can
support various cabling architectures such as direct-connect, inter-connect, and cross-
connect channel configurations. CommScope Labs have developed their application guide
to highlight the recommended placement of the components of the 360 UHD solution.

The following illustrations identify various links between different areas within a data center
network environment. These configurations contain direct-connect, inter-connect, and cross-
connect architectures. Connection schemes may vary between data center size and complexity.
Direct-Connect Configuration
The most basic structured cabling architecture is direct-connect. In the direct-connect
configuration, all the servers are directly connected to the switches through a common
patching apparatus. This configuration directly connects server hosts or storage targets to
network switches without the use of an inter-connect or cross-connect field. The ultra high
density fiber shelves are located in the cabinet of that holds the SAN directors.
The direct-connect configuration is ideal for environments with low or zero change rate,
storage equipment within close proximity to SAN directors, or where rack and floor space
is at premium. Benefits of inter-connect rely heavily on the grade of fiber cabling chosen
and footprint of the supported area.

Inter-Connect Configuration
Inter-connect structured cabling allows for greater physical layer control in data center
networking areas than direct-connect. The diagram shown places the inter-connect where the
highest frequency of Moves, Adds, or Changes (MAC) occur, between the server and SAN
director. In the inter-connect architecture, all the servers are connected to a consolidation
point between server cabinets and network directors. A zone box may be found between the
SAN directors and storage equipment area. The UHD fiber shelves are located in the SAN
and connect to each inter-connect and floor box with the use of MPO Trunk Cables.
The inter-connect configuration is ideal structured cabling solution for SAN environments
that need to manage their physical layer infrastructure with a low change rate in the server
and storage areas.

Cross-Connect Configuration
Cross-connect structured cabling allows for MAC activity to be performed away from the
active equipment. The diagram shown places the cross-connect where the highest
frequency of Moves, Adds, or Changes (MAC) occur, between the server and SAN director.
In the cross-connect configuration, all the servers are connected to a patching field between
server cabinets and SAN directors. A zone box may be found between the SAN directors
and storage equipment area. The ultra high density fiber shelves are located in the SAN area
and connect to each inter-connect and the floor box with the use of MPO Trunk Cables.
The cross-connect SAN configuration is the ideal structured cabling solution for SAN
environments that need to manage their physical layer infrastructure with high rates change
rate in the server and storage areas. Physical layer intelligence is available in cross-connect
patching fields that is not available in inter-connect or direct-connect configurations.

The following diagrams show the physical layout of a 45U network cabinet supporting (2)
directors and InstaPATCH 360 UHD fiber shelves in the same cabinet. 2u was reserved at
the base of each director for horizontal patch cord management. High density
environments also require the use of vertical patch cord management to preserve the
separation and accessibility of patch cord bundles and are recommended to be placed in
800MM wide network cabinets or 600MM wide network racks with dedicated cable
managers on each side.
In these scenarios each set of (6) UHD shelves is provisioned to support a single director
in the 384 duplex LC port examples, however 11 UHD fiber panels can also support this
port count, but would require that a UHD shelf be shared between directors. The scenario
showing 512 duplex LC ports per director would require UHD MPO shelves and array
patch cords to support this density.
