Chap2 Sci

The document provides an overview of key concepts in Class 8 Science, focusing on cells as the basic unit of life, the role of microscopes in discovering microorganisms, and the various types of cells and their functions. It highlights the importance of microorganisms in food production, digestion, and environmental balance, while also noting that some microbes can cause diseases. Key points emphasize the ubiquity and dual nature (beneficial and harmful) of microorganisms.

Chapter Summary (Class 8 Science)

1. Invisible World & Microscope

• Many tiny living things cannot be seen with naked eyes.
• The invention of the microscope helped us see this hidden world.
• Scientists like Robert Hooke discovered cells, and Leeuwenhoek saw
microorganisms for the first time.

2. What is a Cell?
• A cell is the basic unit of life.
• All living organisms are made of cells.

Main parts of a cell:

• Cell membrane → outer covering (controls entry/exit)

• Cytoplasm → where activities happen
• Nucleus → controls all functions

In plants:

• Cell wall → gives strength

• Chloroplast → helps in photosynthesis
• Vacuole → storage

3. Types of Cells
• Cells have different shapes and sizes depending on their function.
o Muscle cell → helps in movement
o Nerve cell → carries messages

Shape = Function (important concept)

4. Levels of Organisation
Living body is organised as:

Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ System → Organism

Example:

• Cells form tissues

• Tissues form organs (like heart, stomach)

5. Microorganisms (Microbes)
• Very tiny organisms, not visible without microscope
• Found everywhere: air, water, soil, body

Types:

• Bacteria
• Fungi
• Protozoa
• Algae

Some are:

• Unicellular (one cell) → bacteria

• Multicellular → fungi, algae

6. Viruses
• Not true cells (acellular)
• Can only reproduce inside a host
• Can cause diseases

7. Importance of Microorganisms
Useful roles:

1. Decomposition
o Break down waste → form manure
o Clean environment
2. Soil fertility
o Rhizobium bacteria fix nitrogen
3. Food preparation
o Yeast → bread, cake
o Lactobacillus → curd
4. Digestion
o Helpful bacteria in our gut
5. Oxygen production
o Microalgae produce large amount of oxygen

8. Microorganisms in Food
• Yeast fermentation → makes dough soft (CO₂ gas)
• Curd formation → bacteria convert milk into curd

Warm conditions help microbes grow faster

9. Role in Environment
• Microbes recycle nutrients
• Convert waste → useful substances
• Help maintain balance in nature

10. Extra Uses

• Production of biogas (fuel)
• Used in cleaning pollution (e.g., oil spills)

11. Key Points (VERY IMPORTANT for Exams)

• Cell = basic unit of life
• All organisms are made of cells
• Microorganisms are everywhere
• Some are useful, some are harmful
• Shape of cell depends on its function
• Microbes help in:
o food
o digestion
o environment cleaning
Super Short Revision (1-minute)
Cells → basic unit
Microscope → helps see tiny life
Microbes → everywhere
Types → bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa
Useful → food, manure, nitrogen fixation
Harmful → diseases
