Computer Memory is the part of a computer system that is used to store data, instructions, and
information temporarily or permanently. It allows the computer to remember data for
processing and future use. Memory plays an important role in determining the speed and
efficiency of a computer. It stores both input data and output results. Without memory, a
computer cannot perform any task because it needs storage to process instructions.

🔹 10. TYPES OF COMPUTER MEMORY

Computer memory is mainly divided into two types:
👉 1. Primary Memory (Main Memory)
👉 2. Secondary Memory (Auxiliary Memory/Secondary memory )

🧠 1. PRIMARY MEMORY (MAIN MEMORY)

🔹 Definition
Primary memory is the memory that is directly connected to the CPU and is used to store data
and instructions temporarily during processing. It is very fast but has limited storage capacity. It
is also called main memory.
👉 Speed: Nanoseconds (Very Fast)

🔸 TYPES OF PRIMARY MEMORY

🔹 1. RAM (Random Access Memory)

✅ Full Form
RAM = Random Access Memory
✅ Definition
RAM is a type of memory that stores data temporarily while the computer is running.
✅ Explanation
RAM is volatile memory, which means data is lost when power is turned off. It is used to store
programs and data that are currently in use. The CPU directly accesses RAM for fast processing.
More RAM increases computer performance and multitasking ability.
✅ Types of RAM

🔸 SRAM (Static Random Access Memory)

Full Form: Static Random Access Memory
Explanation
SRAM stores data using flip-flops and does not need to be refreshed repeatedly. It is faster and
more reliable than DRAM but more expensive. It is mainly used in cache memory.
👉 Features:
 Very fast
 Expensive
 No refresh required

🔸 DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory)

Full Form: Dynamic Random Access Memory
Explanation
DRAM stores data in capacitors and needs to be refreshed continuously. It is slower than SRAM
but cheaper and widely used as main memory.
👉 Features:
 Slower than SRAM
 Cheap
 Needs refresh

🔹 2. ROM (Read Only Memory)

✅ Full Form
ROM = Read Only Memory
✅ Definition
ROM is a type of memory that stores permanent data and instructions.
✅ Explanation
ROM is non-volatile, meaning data is not lost when power is turned off. It contains important
instructions like booting process (BIOS). It is used to start the computer.

🔸 Types of ROM

🔸 PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory)

Full Form: Programmable Read Only Memory
Explanation
PROM can be programmed only once. Once data is written, it cannot be changed. It is used in
devices where data does not need modification.

🔸 EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)

Full Form: Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
Explanation
EPROM can be erased using ultraviolet (UV) light and then reprogrammed. It is reusable but
requires special equipment.
🔸 EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only
Memory)
Full Form: Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
Explanation
EEPROM can be erased and reprogrammed using electrical signals. It is more flexible and
widely used in modern devices.

🔹 3. CACHE MEMORY
✅ Full Form
Cache has no full form (it is a word itself)
✅ Definition
Cache memory is a high-speed memory located between CPU and RAM.
✅ Explanation
It stores frequently used data and instructions so that CPU can access them quickly. It improves
processing speed and reduces access time. It is smaller but faster than RAM.

🔸 Types of Cache
 L1 (Level 1 Cache) → Fastest, smallest, inside CPU
 L2 (Level 2 Cache) → Slower than L1, larger
 L3 (Level 3 Cache) → Larger but slower than L2

🔹 4. REGISTERS
✅ Definition
Registers are the smallest and fastest memory units inside the CPU.
✅ Explanation
They store temporary data and instructions needed immediately by CPU. They operate at very
high speed and are used during execution of programs.

🔸 Types of Registers
 Accumulator
 Program Counter (PC)
 Instruction Register (IR)
 Memory Address Register (MAR)
 Memory Data Register (MDR)

💾 2. SECONDARY MEMORY (AUXILIARY

MEMORY)

🔹 Definition
Secondary memory is used to store data permanently for long-term use. It is not directly
accessed by CPU and is slower than primary memory. It has large storage capacity.
👉 Speed: Microseconds (Slower)

🔹 5. VIRTUAL MEMORY
✅ Definition
Virtual memory is a technique where part of secondary memory (hard disk) is used as RAM.
✅ Explanation
It allows the system to run large programs even when physical RAM is insufficient. It improves
multitasking but is slower than actual RAM. It is automatically managed by the operating
system.
