the Assignment Brief
This task is group work because developing appropriate
programming interventions in international development often
takes more than one person - and the intervention proposal is
better as you consult others and extend on each other's thinking.
Both as face to face and online students, you have the
opportunity to be creative about how you present the work.
Purpose: This task is designed to:
help you to engage with the course content through practical
application
give you experience of some of the reality of working in a
teams to plan an intervention, including a monitoring and
evaluation systems
Provide opportunities for sharing your different perspectives
on the learning material from the course
Afford opportunities to develop skills in presenting your ideas
effectively in forms other than academic essays and written
reports.
So what exactly do we need to do?
TASK 1: Develop a program logic. All students - both face to
face and on line - will be organised in groups. Each group will
work on an intentional development issue affecting people living
in the Asia Pacific region to develop an intervention's program
logic. A program logic sets out what a project will do and how it
will do it, inducing outlining input, activities outputs and
outcomes. In other words, it represents a project’s theory of
change to address the development/humanitarian issue.
The program logic does this by visually representing a linear
sequence of steps that need to occur for a project to meet its
desired outcomes. This generally consists of identifying the
inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes (from immediate, to
long term). An important component of program logic is the
identification of assumptions that link steps and indicators.
Together with your program logic you will also develop a
motoring and evaluation ( (M & E) framework.
: General guide
• Program Logic; what are we trying to achieve and how
Outputs-immediate results. (people are more engaged in the projects for instance and they
participate in the workshops, they come up with solutions and interrogate themselves on what’s
needed. People are attending. Stakeholders are supporting etc.
Outcomes (change that is occurring (basically aims of the project
Good communication and ownership in the team, but with the stakeholders as well (we can have it
as an output or to be considered in the monitoring and evaluation). Good idea to put stakeholder
meeting in the activities)
Program logic is a tool to keep track of the details and helps us evaluate the kind of change that
we want. In the theory of change we are making hypothesis on how we are going to make the
change that we want. The program logic interrogates our assumptions and a reality check
Monitoring- are the inputs using in a appropriate way. Are they turned into the right activities. Are
the activities having the right outputs… Outcomes monitoring is collecting data that demonstrates
tangible change=> important to document the change that is occurring. How long, how expensive,
what benefits, what participation etc. VS what was planned/expected. Which indicators can provide
evidence of a change or preconditions (she suggests no more than two indicators for each
outcome)
Include in the activities: formulation of framework.
