Science Chapter 5

Chapter 5 discusses the concepts of forces and magnets, explaining how forces can change the motion of objects, with gravity being a key force that pulls objects towards the Earth. It also covers friction, which slows down moving objects, and details the properties of magnets, including attraction and repulsion between different poles and the distinction between magnetic and non-magnetic materials. The chapter emphasizes the importance of standard units for measuring force, length, and time.

Forces & Magnets

Force
Force can make some objects change shapes,
speed up, slow down or change direction.

Isaac Newton, lived in Great Britain 1643 - 1727,

found out that forces can make objects speed up,
slow down or change direction.

The standard unit of force is the Newton (n).
Gravity
Gravity is the force that pulls the objects
towards the centre of the Earth.
Gravity makes objects have weight.

People and objects don’t fall off the Earth

because they can only fall towards the centre
of the Earth.
friction
what is friction?
When an object moves on another object, it makes a
force called friction.
Friction happens where the outside part of the
object, the surface, pushes over the surface of the

surface of the slide slows her down.
The more friction there is the slower she will slide.
A surface that has only a little friction is called
slippery surface.
Magnets and poles
magnets Somtimes magnets can push apart instead of
pulling together. Magnets can repel.
Magnets come in different shapes.

Magnets can push and pull. This force is called

magnetism.
Materials that are attracted to a magnest is called
magnetic materials.
Materials that are not attracted to a magnet is
called non magnetic materials.
magnets attract, magnets repel
Opposite poles will always attract each other.

Two poles the same will always repel each

other.

North poles and south poles both attract

magnetic materials like these paper clips.
Magnetic or non-magnetic
Magnetic
Magnetic materials are the materials that are
pulled to wards a magnet.
Examples : iron, nickle and steel.

non-magnetic
Non magnetic materials are the materials that cannot be
pulled to a magnet.
Example : wood, paper, aluminium, etc
