Complex Analysis Exam Practice: Geometric Mappings and

Problem 1: Mapping of a Semi-Infinite Strip

Question: Let f (z) = ez . Find and sketch the image of the semi-infinite strip defined by 0 ≤ y ≤ π and
x ≤ 0 in the w-plane.

Solution
Let z = x + iy and w = f (z) = ρeiϕ . Then w = ex+iy = ex eiy , which implies:

ρ = |w| = ex , ϕ = arg(w) = y

Mapping the boundaries:

1. Vertical segment (x = 0, 0 ≤ y ≤ π): Maps to ρ = e0 = 1 and 0 ≤ ϕ ≤ π. This is the upper unit
semi-circle.
2. Horizontal line (y = 0, x ≤ 0): Maps to ϕ = 0 and 0 < ρ ≤ 1. This is the interval (0, 1] on the
real axis.
3. Horizontal line (y = π, x ≤ 0): Maps to ϕ = π and 0 < ρ ≤ 1. This is the interval [−1, 0) on the
real axis.
4. Interior (x < 0): Maps to 0 < ρ < 1.
Result: The strip maps to the upper half-disk |w| ≤ 1, Im(w) ≥ 0.

Problem 3: Inversion Mapping

Question: Find the image of the vertical line x = 1 under the inversion mapping w = 1/z.

Solution
From w = 1/z, we have z = 1/w. Let w = u + iv:
1 u − iv u −v
z= = 2 2
=⇒ x = 2 , y=
u + iv u +v u + v2 u2
+ v2
The line is x = 1, so:
u
= 1 =⇒ u = u2 + v 2 =⇒ u2 − u + v 2 = 0
u2 + v 2

1
Completing the square for u:
(u − 1/2)2 + v 2 = (1/2)2
Result: The line x = 1 maps to a circle centered at (1/2, 0) with radius 1/2, excluding the origin.

Problem 3: Branch Cuts for Square Roots

Question: Let f (z) = (z 2 − 1)1/2 . Define a branch that is analytic on C \ [−1, 1].

Solution
√ √ √
Write f (z) = z − 1 z + 1. Let z − 1 = r1 eiθ1 and z + 1 = r2 eiθ2 . Then f (z) = r1 r2 ei(θ1 +θ2 )/2 . To
make the function analytic on C \ [−1, 1], we choose the ranges: 0 ≤ θ1 < 2π and 0 ≤ θ2 < 2π. The
discontinuity (jump) occurs when the sum of the angles changes by 2π. By checking points on the real
axis:

1. For x > 1: θ1 = 0, θ2 = 0 =⇒ Phase = 0.

2. For −1 < x < 1: θ1 = π, θ2 = 0 =⇒ Phase = π/2. (Discontinuous)
3. For x < −1: θ1 = π, θ2 = π =⇒ Phase = π. (Continuous jump of 2π total phase).

Result: The branch cut is the finite segment [−1, 1] on the real axis.
