Using a planning grid

STUDY
Explain to children that you are going to demonstrate one method of planning writing. Remind children that they need to decide on the
purpose, audience and genre for their writing before they begin to plan it and that if they are writing a poem, it is usually better to dabble
with ideas instead of creating a formal plan. Select the relevant ‘Planning grid’ ITR for the class writing project and talk through or model
planning your piece of writing, talking through the process as you go and expanding on your ideas. Remind children that plans are only
a guide and that they can be changed at any time.

DISCUSS

• Has anyone in the class used this technique before?

• What do you think of this technique? Is it helpful?
• What do you think the advantages and disadvantages are of using a planning grid?

CREATE
Encourage children to begin using this technique in their own writing during this lesson.
