SCENE 1:

(Lights up. Circus in full performance. Performers and audience everywhere.)

SONG: “The Greatest Show"

PT Barnum (singing, full energy): This is where you wanna be! It’s everything you ever want, it’s
everything you ever need!

(Performs across the stage, engaging performers and audience.)

PT Barnum: And it’s here right in front of you, this is where you wanna be!

(Suddenly, performers disappear. Lights narrow; Barnum is alone.)

PT Barnum (soft, almost empty): And it’s here… right in front of you…

*Looks around. Silence. Slowly turns & he sees YOUNG BARNUM.*

SCENE 2:

*Young Barnum staring at elegant clothes.*

Young Barnum: Imagine wearing something like that…

(Young Charity enters.)

Young Charity (teasing): You’ll get in trouble.

Young Barnum (smirks): So will you.

*Small laugh, then pause.*

Young Charity (serious): Father is sending me away.

Young Barnum: Away? Where?

Young Charity: Finishing school. I don't know what my life will be there... I don't know who I'm supposed
to become. *She looks down.*

Young Barnum: You don’t have to become anything. You already are… everything.

(Music begins.)
SONG: “A Million Dreams”

*Montage (with dialogue moments)*

o Young Barnum chasing Charity as she’s leaving for finishing school.

Young Barnum (Crying): Charity!
o Letter writing
o Young Barnum got slap hard by Charity's father
Charity's Father (angry): Stay away from my daughter!
o Dying father’s bedside.
o Young Barnum became homeless

*Barnum got caught stealing a bread from a bakeshop*

Baker: Hey! *Young Barnum got caught and is pushed down*

(A woman kneels beside him)
Woman: Here... (While handing him an apple) Take this.
o (Outside a large house. Barnum nervously knocks.)

PT Barnum: Sir… I came to speak with you.

Charity’s Father (cold): There’s nothing to discuss.

PT Barnum: I love your daughter… and I want to give her a life she deserves.

Charity’s Father: She’ll come back when she realizes what it means to live with

nothing.

(Charity walks forward.)

(They walk away together.)

o PT Barnum proposed to Charity

o Charity got pregnant

SCENE 3:

(Lights up. Small home. Charity and two young daughters.)

*Door opens, PT Barnum enters*

PT Barnum: There they are! I missed you.

Child 2: Did you bring us something?

*PT Barnum hesitates for a split second, then he smiles and reaches into his bag*

PT Barnum: Let's see...

*He pulls out small trinkes. The children light up*

Child 1: It's beauiful!

Child 2: Yeah...

Charity (gently): You didn’t have to…

PT Barnum (quiet): I wanted to.

(Messenger enters.)

*Knock on the door*

*PT Barnum opens the door, a messenger stands there.*

Messenger: Mr. Barnum... I'm sorry.

Messenger: The company has gone under. You’re out of work.

PT Barnum (whispering): I understand.

*PT Barnum closes the door slowly, turns back to his family, forcing a smile.*

(Charity and their daughters looked confused)

Child 2: Papa?

*Charity and their daughters walked towards PT Barnum, their daughters giving him a hug while Charity
pat him on the shoulders.*

PT Barnum: Everything's going to be alright.

(Children exit slowly with Charity, Barnum is now alone)

PT Barnum (whispering to himself): Alright... How?

*He looks around the small house, cramped*

PT Barnum: No... This isn't enough.

SCENE 4:

*Barnum pacing.*
PT Barnum: There has to be something more... Something bigger...

*He stops suddenly*

PT Barnum: People don’t want the ordinary… They want to be amazed!

(Bank office lights up)

Bank Clerk: You don’t have the funds.

PT Barnum: Then I’ll create something worth funding.

Bank Clerk: A museum?

PT Barnum: Not just a museum... An experience.

Bank Clerck: You're asking us to believe in somethng that doesn't exist.

PT Barnum: Everything starts that way.

(Lights shift: *Barnum's fade museum* )

(Few people pass by, uninterested)

PT Barnum: Step right in! Wonders from around the world!

*People ignore him*

PT Barnum (frustrated, talking to hhimself): Why isn't this working?

*He watches people walk past something unusual nearby, laughing, reacting*

PT Barnum: They don’t want to see what’s normal… They want something different.

(Transition: music builds into “Come Alive” instrumental.)

SCENE 5:

(Street setting. Barnum approaches Lettie Lutz, who keeps her face hidden)
PT Barnum: Why are you hiding?

Lettie: Why do you care?

PT Barnum: Because I see someone worth seeing.

Lettie: People laugh at me.

PT Barnum: Then let them laugh… give them something unforgettable.

Lettie: You really believe that?

PT Barnum: I believe in you.

(Other performers appear: Tom Thumb, strongman, twins, sword swallower, etc.)

PT Barnum (to all): You've been told your whole live that you don't belong... That you should stay
hidden.

*He steps forward*

PT Barnum: I’m giving you a stage!

SONG: “Come Alive”

(During song: performers gain confidence.)

SCENE 6:

(Lights burst open. Circus energy returns.)

SONG: “The Greatest Show”

*Crowd cheers, excitement builds*

PT Barnum (commanding): Ladies & Gentlemen! Prepare to be amazed!

Critic: This is not entertainment!

Crowd Member: It’s disturbing!

(Performers shrink back.)

Lettie: You said they’d accept us…

*Barnum hesitates, he has no answer*

(Silence)

*Lettie slowly steps forward*

Lettie (quiet but growing stronger): No...

(Music begins.)

SONG: “This Is Me"

(Performers join, one by one, embracing themselves.)

Lettie (proud): We are done hiding.

(Lights fade.)

SCENE 7:

(Formal theater)
*Audience claps politely, Barnum notices bored expressions, & Phillip sits stiffly in the balcony*

Barnum: You can tell a lot about people by what they laugh at.

Phillip: And what they don't?

Barnum: Exactly.

Phillip: And you... specialize in making them laugh?

Barnum: I make them feel alive. That's different.

Barnum (leaning closer): You're Phillip Carlyle.

Phillip: You've done your homework.

Barnum: I know talent when I see it. Come see my show.

*Phillip hesitates*

(Dimly lit bar. Drinks on table. Music swells. Barnum and Phillip circle each other, tension building.)

Song: "THE OTHER SIDE"

Barnum: Step into my world-risk everything, gain everything.

Phillip: I'm risking my reputation.

Barnum: You're risking nothing if you don't try.

(They move across bar, tapping glasses, circling each other. Energy grows. By the end, Phillip nods.)

Phillip: Alright. I'm in.

(Handshake. Song ends. Lights fade into backstage circus.)

SCENE 8:

*Barnum leads Phillip through backstage areas*

(Lights gradually reveal performers warming up: acrobats, jugglers, strongman, fire-eater.)
Barnum: First, Lettie Lutz.

Lettie (smiling, confident): Hello, sir.

Barnum: Tom Thumb.

Tom Thumb: Sir.

Barnum: And over there... acrobats, fire-eaters, every extraordinary talent imaginable.

*Phillip watches the performers*

Phillip (softly, impressed): This... this is unlike anything l've ever seen.

Barnum: And we're only getting started.

(They continue through the backstage area. Barnum points out more performers)

(Spotlight on stage center)

*Anne dances gracefully, practicing*

Phillip (whispering to Barnum): Who is she?

Barnum: Anne Wheeler. She defies gravity... and expectation.

(Anne notices Phillip watching.)

Anne: Careful where you look.

Phillip: I wasn't...

Anne: You were.

(Tension builds.)

(Barnum leave, leaving alone Anne and Philip)

SCENE 9:

(Several short vignettes show Phillip helping set up trapeze mats, bringing props, or clapping for
performers. Anne gradually lets him observe her dancing. Stage lights shift to warm tones, showing
growing connection.)
Phillip: I've never seen anyone move like you.

Anne (dancing, playful): And you've never been told "no" by someone like me before.

Phillip (smiling): I don't plan on stopping.

*Anne twirls and retreats slightly, teasing him*

("Rewrite the Stars" starts playing)

Phillip: Anne... I can't stop thinking about us. About what could be.

Anne (turning away, softly): You're a world I can't step into.

Phillip: Maybe... but I want to try.

Anne (hesitant, then smiling faintly): You're... persistent.

*They move toward each other, but she keeps a small distance*

Phillip: If the world won't let us... then let's rewrite the stars.

Song: "Rewrite the Stars"

Phillip (singing): What if we rewrite the stars? Say you were made to be mine...
Anne (singing): Nothing can keep us apart.

Anne: 'Cause you're not meant for me...

Phillip: Then let's try anyway.

Anne (softly, smiling faintly): You're crazy...

Phillip: Maybe... but it's worth it.

SCENE 10:

(Elegant European parlor. Chandeliers hang overhead. High society guests mingle.)

*Barnum enters with confidence, walking past musicians and waiters. He notices Jenny Lind*
Barnum (aside, whispering to himself): There she is... the voice that could change everything.

*Barnum approaches Jenny carefully, bowing slightly*

Barnum: Miss Lind, I presume?

Jenny Lind (calm, slightly wary): Yes. And you are...?

Barnum (smiling, charming): P. T. Barnum. I bring people extraordinary experiences. And I believe the
world deserves to hear your voice.

Jenny: I perform for those who appreciate music, sir. I am not... a novelty.

Barnum (nodding respectfully): Of course. I seek no gimmicks. Only to give people beauty... to show
them what you already share so effortlessly.

Jenny (studying him, skeptical): And why should I trust a man whose work is... circus and spectacle?

Barnum (softly, passionately): Because I see the art in you, and I know how to let the world see it too.

(Soft instrumental music begins of the song "Never Enough")

Jenny: And if I agree... this world you promise, will it respect me as an artist?
Barnum: I promise... respect. And admiration. But more than that, I promise a stage where your voice is
heard by everyone who needs it.

(Spotlight on Jenny Lind.)

*She stands on a small platform at center stage. Musicians begin. Barnum watches from the side,
mesmerized.*

Song: "Never Enough"

*Barnum watches, completely captivated. Emotions of awe and desire blend with admiration for her
talent*

*Audience reacts with polite applause, then rapture.*

*After her performance,. Barnum steps forward and they now together to the audience*

Barnum: Thank you... that... that was everything.

Jenny (curious, faint smile): You think the world will understand?

Barnum: I will make them understand.

SCENE 11:

(At Barnum's Office)

Barnum: She's a revelation, Phillip. People have never heard anything like her!
Phillip: Yes... but are you sure you're not risking everything? Your family... your circus... all of it.

Barnum (grinning): I've taken risks before. This... this is different. She's... perfection. And America will
pay to hear perfection.

Barnum: Her voice... it deserves to reach the world. I will make it happen.

Phillip (hesitant): Just... don't lose sight of what you already have.

SCENE 12:

(Barnum's home)

*Charity folds laundry Barnum enters, exhilarated, holding posters and letters from Jenny Lind's
concerts. His eyes shine with excitement, but his tone is impatient.*
Barnum: Charity! Look at this! Every city, every stage... they love her! People are calling for

Charity (quietly, folding clothes): And what about us? Do we not deserve your attention?

Barnum (not noticing the hurt in her voice): I am doing this for all of us! For the circus, for our family's
legacy!

Charity (firmly, hurt showing): A legacy doesn't mean leaving us behind, Barnum. I barely see you. The
girls barely see you. You're... gone, even when you're here.

Barnum (defensive, waving a poster): Gone? I'm building something magnificent! Can't you see that?

Charity (tears forming, voice shaking): I see a man I married... who no longer knows who he is. You think
admiration from strangers can replace love from your family?

*Barnum hesitates, then softens slightly, conflicted.*

Barnum: I... I thought they'd understand. That everyone would be proud.

Charity: They might be, but I'm not. And the girls... they don't understand why you're never home.

Barnum (quietly, almost to himself): just wanted to make them proud...

Charity (turning to leave, tearful): Then maybe I need to find pride elsewhere.

SONG: “Tightrope”
SCENE 13:

*LIghts flicker (red/orange)*

Ensemble (panicking): Fire! Fire!

*Perfomers panicking*
Philip: Get out! Now!

*Philip helps Anne becahse she was injured*

(Chaos, fire. Barnum enters late)

PT Barnum: No… no…

Lettie (angry): Where were you?!

(Silence.)

SCENE 14:

(PT Barnum at home with Charity)

PT Barnum: I thought I needed more…

Charity: You already had everything.

(Long pause)

PT Barnum (soft): I see that now.

*PT Barnum retuurns to performers*

PT Barnum: You gave me a place to belong... And I left you.

PT Barnum: If you'll let me... I want to make it right.

SONG: “From Now On”

(Barnum reconciles with performers.)

FINAL SCENE:

(Full cast, bright lights.)

SONG: “The Greatest Show” (Finale)

*PT Barnum remove his hat, gives it to Philip*

PT Barnum: The show goes on… with you.

*Walks to Charity and children*

PT Barnum: This is where we belong.

(Lights fade.)

(Curtain closing)
