Energy Efficiency & Conservation
▪ Energy efficiency simply means using less energy to perform the same task –
that is, eliminating energy waste.
▪ Energy efficiency brings a variety of benefits:
▪ reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
▪ reducing demand for energy imports,
▪ and lowering our costs on a household and economy-wide level.
▪ There are enormous opportunities for efficiency improvements in every sector of
the economy, whether it is buildings, transportation, industry, or energy
generation.
Buildings
▪ Building designers are looking to optimize building efficiency and then
incorporate renewable energy technologies, leading to the creation of zero-
energy buildings.
▪ Changes in existing buildings can also be made to reduce energy usage and costs.
These may include small steps, such as choosing LED light bulbs and energy
efficient appliances.
Energy Generation and Distribution
▪ Combined heat and power systems capture the "waste" heat from power plants
and use it to provide heating, cooling, and/or hot water to nearby buildings and
facilities.
Community Design
▪ Neighborhoods that are designed with mixed use developments and safe
accessible options for walking, biking, and public transportation are key to
reducing the need for personal vehicle travel.
Vehicles
▪ More energy efficient vehicles require less fuel to cover a given distance. This
generates fewer emissions, and makes them significantly less expensive to
operate. fully electric vehicles are particularly fuel efficient.
Freight
▪ Freight can be moved more efficiently by improving the efficiency of rail and truck
transportation and by shifting long-distance freight transport from trucks to rail.
Human Behavior
▪ The four strategies above improve energy efficiency primarily through technology
and design. However, the way people use these technologies will significantly
impact their effectiveness.
Energy Conservation
▪ Energy conservation is the decision and practice of using less energy.
▪ Turning off the light when you leave the room,
▪ unplugging appliances when they’re not in use
▪ and walking instead of driving are all examples of energy conservation.
▪ The two main reasons people conserve energy are to gain more control over their energy
bill and reduce the demand on the earth’s natural resources.
Some More Common Practices
Refrigerator Down.
•Refrigerators account for as much as 13.7 % of the total household energy use. To
increase energy savings, set your fridge to 37 degrees Fahrenheit and your freezer to 3
degrees Fahrenheit.
Use energy-efficient light bulbs
•Install energy-saving CFL or LED bulbs in your lighting fixtures to use 25-35 percent less
energy, compared to regular incandescent bulbs.
Clean or replace air filters as recommended
The air conditioner and heater are the biggest energy users in most homes, and these
appliances have to work even harder with dirty air filters. Write the date of installation
on the filter to help you remember when it needs to be replaced.
Do full loads
• Make sure your dish washer and washing machine are full before running them to get
the most energy-saving use from each run cycle.
Use smart power strips
• Even when not in use, household electronics still draw power from outlets. This
phenomenon is called “phantom load”. Energy-saving smart power strips, which shut
down appliances that have gone into standby mode, help you cut down on phantom-
load costs, potentially resulting in money and energy savings.
Air-dry clothes
• And instead of using the dryer on a nice day, hang your clothes outside to dry.
Bake with glass or ceramic pans
• You can set the oven’s temperature 25 degrees lower than indicated in the recipe
when you do this.
Cook using the right-sized burner
• Conserve energy by using your stove’s small burners for small pots and large burners
for large pots.
What is the difference?
• Energy conservation involves using less energy by adjusting your behaviors and
habits.
• Energy efficiency, on the other hand, involves using technology that requires less
energy to perform the same function.
• Energy-saving light bulbs, large household appliances, smart thermostats, and smart
home hubs like Constellation Connect are all examples of technology that can be
energy efficient.
Comparison between energy conservation and energy efficiency.
Advantages of Efficiency of Energy Advantages of Conservation of Energy
1. Energy efficiency saves money. 1. Significantly reduce your utility bills
2. Earn a great return on your investment
2. It improves the economy.
3. Increase your property value
3. It is environmentally friendly.
4. Enhance your quality of life
4. It improves national security.
5. Protect the environment
5. It upgrades and enhances quality of life.
6. It improves indoor air quality.
Energy Efficiency Policy of India
INTRODUCTION
▪ India has made rapid progress towards economic self-reliance over the last few
decades.
▪ Impressive progress has been made in the fields of industry, agriculture,
communication, transport and other sectors necessitating growing consumption of
energy for developmental and economic activities.
▪ Conventional source of energy such as coal, oil and gas are scarce and exhaustible.
▪ Energy prices will rise in the long run to reflect their relative scarcity and high cost of
exploration and extraction.
▪ Hence, all attempts need to be made expeditiously to ensure the optimal use of the
available resources so as to manage the viability and availability of energy use and
supply.
▪ This has led the Government of India through the Energy Conservation Act and the
Bureau of Energy Efficiency to launch several programmes.
THE INDIAN ENERGY CONSERVATION ACT
▪ EC Act enacted in October 2001
▪ Become effective from 1st March 2002
MISSION OF BEE
▪ Develop policy and strategies with a thrust on self regulation and market
principles, within the overall framework of the EC Act with the primary
objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy.
THE INDIAN ENERGY CONSERVATION ACT
▪ The five major provisions of EC Act relate to:
▪ Designated Consumers (mainly energy intensive industries) to comply with the
specific energy consumption norms for the manufactured products and services and
establishment of energy management system,
▪ Standards and Labeling of energy consuming appliances, gadgets and equipment to
ensure promotion of energy efficiency of the new stocks entering the market
▪ Energy Conservation Building Code ensuring that new commercial buildings
constructed in the country have less electricity consumption
THE INDIAN ENERGY CONSERVATION ACT
▪ The five major provisions of EC Act relate to:
▪ Creation of Institutional Set up (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) for effective
coordination of the energy conservation efforts in the country and
▪ Establishment of Energy Conservation Fund at Centre and States to provide
necessary financial support for energy efficiency initiatives in the country.
▪ Energy efficiency institutional practices and programs in India are now mainly
being guided through various voluntary and mandatory provisions of the Energy
Conservation Act
