Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) refers to communication that happens
between people through the use of technology or mediums like computers. According
to Santoro (1995), CMC includes almost all uses of computers in human communication,
highlighting the role of technology in shaping communication. December (1997) explains
that CMC is a process where people communicate through computers in different
environments and situations. Meanwhile, Herring (1996) defines CMC as
communication that takes place between human beings through computers. In short,
CMC is how people interact on online platforms such as social media, messaging
applications, and websites.
Communication in CMC is dynamic, transactional, multimodal, and mediated.
Communication is dynamic because it continuously changes depending on context and
participants. It is transactional because both sender and receiver influence each other.
CMC is multimodal because it uses text, images, audio, and video. Lastly,
communication is mediated because it happens through devices such as smartphones
and computers.
CMC has different types and features. Synchronous communication refers to real-time
interaction such as chats and video calls, while asynchronous communication refers to
delayed interaction such as emails. CMC can also be text-based or multimodal. Another
feature is anonymity, where users can hide their identity. CMC has many advantages
such as being fast, low-cost, and accessible across locations.
Multimodal communication refers to the use of multiple modes to convey meaning such
as visual, written, oral, audio, spatial, and gestural modes. Examples include
documentaries, podcasts, websites, and advertisements.
CMC has unique digital language features such as abbreviations, emojis, hashtags, and
code-switching. These features help express emotions and connect people online.
Online communication is also non-linear, and usernames help build online identity.
Through this project, I learned that CMC is more than just chatting online. It allows
people to share ideas, express feelings, and connect with others. It is also important to
be responsible when posting online because it can affect other people.
