PERFORMANCE TASK (Final)
Activity Title:
“Book Cover of the Philippines Today: A Reflection of Current Issues”
Instructions:
1. Task Description
• Students will work in the same groups as their midterm performance task.
• Each group will design a book cover that reflects the current issues faced by the Philippines
today, drawing inspiration from how José Rizal symbolically represented societal problems in
the cover of Noli Me Tangere.
2. Identifying Current Social Issues
• Research and identify current social, political, or cultural issues in the Philippines that
resonate with the themes in Rizal's novels. Examples include (but are not limited to):
▪ Corruption in government
▪ Social inequality and poverty
▪ Political polarization and misinformation
▪ Freedom of speech and human rights
▪ Environmental degradation
▪ The influence of social media
▪ Historical revisionism
• Choose one or two key issues to focus on in your book cover design. You must be able to
clearly articulate why you chose these issues and how they connect to the novel.
3. Conceptualizing the Book Cover
• Consider the following elements:
▪ Visual: Use images, symbols, and colors that effectively convey the chosen social
issue. Think about how visual elements can communicate complex ideas.
▪ Typography: Choose a font and layout that complement the visual imagery and
reflect the tone of the novel and the chosen issue. Consider the emotional impact of
different fonts.
▪ Title: Create a title that represents the overall message
▪ Explanation: Include a short explanation (1 paragraph) that interprets the meaning
of their symbols or overall theme
4. Explanation/Reflection
• Along with your book cover, submit a short explanation (1 paragraph) addressing the following:
1. The specific connections you made between Rizal's time and the present day.
2. The symbolism and meaning behind your chosen visual elements.
3. The message you hope to convey with your book cover.
5. Output Presentation
• Each group will present their book cover and explanation in class in a 3-minute presentation.
6. Format
• The book cover can be hand-drawn or manually crafted using traditional art materials or created
using digital art tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe, etc.).
• All elements of the book cover must be original and created by the students themselves,
whether drawn by hand or made digitally.
7. Submission Guidelines
• Submit your final output via Google Classroom only.
• Your submission must include two separate files:
1. The Book Cover (digital artwork or drawing)
2. The Explanation/Reflection of book cover
• Both files must be attached to your Google Classroom submission.
• Only one member of the pair should submit the files.
• Make sure to indicate both your names in the file name or in the private comment section.
7. Grading
• This activity will comprise 20% of your final term grade.
• Please refer to the rubric below.
