Final Lecture

The document outlines the concept of a thermodynamic cycle, detailing its elements such as the working substance, heat source, heat sink, and engine. It provides an example of a cycle using a boiler, turbine, condenser, and pump, and highlights the Carnot Cycle as the most efficient thermodynamic cycle. Additionally, it includes calculations related to heat addition, rejection, and work output for a Carnot cycle using air as the working substance.

CYCLE:
It is a series of processes that a system undergoes, whereby the system's starting state is also
its final state.

ELEMENTS OF A CYCLE:
1. Working Substance - a fluid that undergoes several state changes; receives and rejects heat to
produce net work output.

2. Heat Source (Heat Reservoir) - hot body

3. Heat Sink (Heat Receiver) - cold body

4. Engine - component of the cycle wherein the working substance performs work

This is an example of a cycle. It consists of a boiler as the heat source, the turbine as the
engine, condenser as the heat sink, and pump to apply pressure to the working substance.

isothermal expansion is 9 cu. ft. and the pressure is 300 psia. The ratio of expansion during the
addition of heat is 2 and the temperature of the cold body is 90°F. Find:
1. Heat added in BTU
2. Heat rejected in BTU
3. Work net in BTU
