II. Module Description:

responsible clothing consumption and environmental stewardship. It explores how individual choices in
fashion can reduce waste, conserve resources, and support ethical practices. The module is designed for
senior high school or college students under Home Economics, TLE, Consumer Education, or
Environmental Studies.
III. Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, the learners should be able to:
1. explain the concept of sustainable fashion and the 5R’s of Fashion.
2. identify environmental and social issues caused by fast fashion.
3. apply the 5R’s in clothing selection, use, and disposal.
4. demonstrate creative ways to reuse, repair, or recycle clothing items.
5. develop responsible consumer behavior.
6. show appreciation for sustainability and ethical fashion practices.
IV. Key Concepts
A. Introduction
Fashion is a powerful form of self-expression, but it also has a significant impact on the
environment. The rise of fast fashion has led to excessive waste, pollution, and unethical labor
practices. To address these issues, the 5R’s of Fashion provide a practical guide for making more
sustainable clothing choices.
B. 5R’s of Fashion
1. REDUCE
This has been true for various successful figures, including Barack Obama, who only ever
wears grey or blue suits as a way to focus his “decision making energy”. Reducing becomes much
bigger than just fashion and your wardrobe—it will have you looking at other areas of your life, too.
A useful question to pose to yourself is: “When did I last wear this?”. The answer should help
to determine if the garment has served its purpose, and to decipher what should stay and what
should go. And when we say go, we don’t mean into landfill, but giving to a friend or donating to the
local charity drop off.
2. REWEAR/REUSE
Reusing is essential to minimizing your fashion footprint, and we need to normalize re
wearing outfits. We already have so many clothes in our closets, including many that we love and
cherish, so of course, we should want to wear them again and again.
“It's 2026, we need to normalize re wearing outfits.”
3. RECYCLE
Clothing recycling significantly contributes to prolonging the lifecycle of clothes, addressing
concerns related to overproduction, excessive consumption, and promoting sustainable practices
within the fashion industry.
The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters globally, with textile waste filling landfills and
synthetic fibers shedding microplastics into oceans. Sustainable recycling of old clothes and textiles
has become crucial to reducing this environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.
4. REPAIR
Repair encourages fixing damaged clothing instead of throwing it away.
Clothing repair is a practical and eco-friendly way to extend the life of your favorite garments
and accessories. Not only does it help you save money, but it also offers a more sustainable option
compared to constantly buying new clothes.
5. RESELL
There are numerous online platforms where you can sell your clothes second hand (or new)
such as Shopee, TikTok shop and a popular one for fashion, Facebook Marketplace.
