Chapter 10: Capacitors Physics Worksheet

Exercise 1: Charging and discharging of a capacitor

The aim of this exercise is to determine the capacitance C of a capacitor by two different methods.
For this aim, we set-up the circuit of document 1 that includes: (1) (2)
 a capacitor, initially uncharged, of capacitance C; K +
 two identical resistors each of resistance R = 1 kΩ;
A D
 an ideal battery of e.m.f E; P q
 a double switch K. C R
E
1) Charging the capacitor B
At the instant t0 = 0, K is placed in position (1) and the charging process F
N
of the capacitor starts. At an instant t, plate A of the capacitor carries a R
charge q and the circuit carries a current i.
1.1) Derive the differential equation that describes the variation of the Doc. 1
voltage u AB = u C across the capacitor.
1.2) The solution of this differential equation has the form:
t uC (V)
uC = a – a e 
where a and  are constants. 12
Determine the expressions of a and  in terms of E, R 2
and C. 10
1.3) Document 2 represents u C as a function of time. Using 2

document 2:
1.3.1) indicate the value of E; 2
6
1.3.2) determine the value of the time constant  of the
circuit. 4
1.4) Deduce the value of C.

2) Discharging the capacitor
The capacitor is completely charged. t (ms)
At an instant t0 = 0, taken as an initial time, K is turned to 0 2 4 6 8 10 12
position (2); the phenomenon of discharging of the capacitor Doc. 2
thus starts.
t W
RC 140
The voltage across the capacitor is: u AB = u C = E e .
2.1) Show that the energy W stored in the capacitor, at an 120
2 t
RC
instant t, has the form: W = W0 e , where W0 is a 100
constant to be determined in terms of C and E.
2.2) Show that for t1 = RC the energy is W = 0.135 W0. 80
2.3) Document 3 shows W as a function of time, during the
discharging of the capacitor. 60
Determine the value of C using document 3 and the
result of part 2.2. 40
