In this lesson, it is important that you fully understand
how we ended up adopting the MTB-MLE. It all began
with the Lingua Franca Education Project (LFEP) where:

The Lingua Franca Education

Project (LFEP) was an early
program of DECS that tested
using the mother tongue as
the language of instruction in
Grade 1.
The project showed that
children learn better when
lessons start in the language
they already know.
In this lesson, it is important that you fully understand
how we ended up adopting the MTB-MLE. It all began
with the Lingua Franca Education Project (LFEP) where:

LFEP became the foundation of

the Mother Tongue-Based
Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE)
program.
MTB-MLE was later officially
adopted by DepEd through policies
and laws, including the K–12
Program.
Under MTB-MLE, pupils from
Kindergarten to Grade 3 are
taught using their mother tongue,
while Filipino and English are
introduced gradually.
In this lesson, it is important that you fully understand
how we ended up adopting the MTB-MLE. It all began
with the Lingua Franca Education Project (LFEP) where:

DepEd recognizes many Philippine

languages (such as Tagalog,
Cebuano, and Ilocano) for
classroom instruction.
Studies by UNESCO, DepEd, and
other researchers show that:
Children understand lessons
better in their home language
Reading, writing, and math skills
improve
Learning becomes easier and more
meaningful
In this lesson, it is important that you fully understand
how we ended up adopting the MTB-MLE. It all began
with the Lingua Franca Education Project (LFEP) where:

Using a language
unfamiliar to learners
can cause confusion and
learning difficulties,
especially in early
grades.
MTB-MLE helps promote
quality education and
supports the goal of
Education for All.
III. APPLY
MTB-MLE is a theoretically-based and well-planned educational
program that provides a strong foundation for literacy using the
learners developing cognitive skills and comprehension of academic
content. Listed below are the "promises" of the MTB-MLE to its
learners.

Literacy Confidence Building

Prior Knowledge and Proficiency
Cognitive Development and Development for
Higher Order Thinking
Two or More

Strong Bridge Languages along
Scaffolding the Macro Skills of
Teaching for Meaning and Communication

Lesson Synthesis
For you, what do you foresee as
challenges or difficulties that you
will encounter when you teach Mother
Tongue as a learning area? Prepare to
share your insights to the class.
Activity Time
On a short bond paper, prepare a two-
page interview essay on the following
points:

Advantages of teaching Mother Tongue as

a subject for both the learners and the
teacher;
challenges or problems encountered;
solutions that were created so far to
address the problems; and
further recommendations to better
achieve the goals of MTB-MLE.
