Course Name: BASIC ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

PART A
Answer all questions. Each question carries 3 marks CO Marks
1 Define active, reactive, and apparent powers in AC circuits. 2 (3)
2 Draw the variation of voltage, current, and power in a purely inductive AC 1 (3)
circuit and comment on the power consumed.
3 Describe the principle of operation of a step-up transformer 2 (3)
4 List the different AC motors with a brief description. Also, mention some of 3 (3)
the applications of each type.
5 With the help of circuit diagrams, show that basic gates can be implemented 4 (3)
using NAND gates only.
6 Explain the working of a transistor as an amplifier. 4 (3)
7 Explain the terms accuracy, precision and resolution of an instrumentation 5 (3)
system.
8 Explain the working principle of a capacitive sensor. 5 (3)
PART B
Answer any one full question from each module. Each question carries 9 marks

Module 1
9 a) Explain Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction. (4)
b) In an AC circuit, the voltmeter and ammeter are connected and they show 220 (5)
volts and 12 Amps respectively. Calculate the maximum value and average
value of voltage and current
10 a) Three Resistances 100 Ω, 200 Ω, and 300 Ω are connected in series to a 250 (5)
V supply. Determine the current in the circuit and the power dissipated in each
resistor.
b) Derive the relationship between line and phase values for voltages and (4)
currents in a 3-phase star-connected system.
Module 2
11 a) With a neat block diagram explain a hydroelectric power plant. (5)
b) Explain a 3-phase 3-wire AC power supply scheme. (4)
12 a) What is the need for earthing? Give an account of different types of earthing. (5)
b) Illustrate the power stages in a motor and explain electrical, mechanical and (4)
overall efficiency.
Module 3
13 a) Explain the V-I characteristics of a PN junction diode and describe its behavior in 4 (5)
forward and reverse bias.
b) Draw the block diagram of a dc power supply and explain. 4 (4)

14 a) Explain the working of simple zener voltage regulator 4 (5)
b) With the help of a block diagram, describe the components and operation of a 4 (4)
Public Address (PA) system.

15 a) Explain the principle of Bourden gauge. 5 (5)
b) Explain the working principle of a strain gauge discuss one application of it. 5 (4)

16 Explain how IoT is used in the implementation of smart street lighting and 6 (9)
smart parking systems, and discuss the benefits of these applications in a smart
city
