Class 9 Science - Chapter 1: Matter in Our
Surroundings
1. Matter: Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
2. Physical Nature of Matter: Matter is made up of particles.
3. Characteristics of Particles:
- Particles have space between them.
- Particles are continuously moving.
- Particles attract each other.
4. States of Matter:
- Solid: Fixed shape and volume (e.g., ice).
- Liquid: Fixed volume but no fixed shape (e.g., water).
- Gas: No fixed shape or volume (e.g., air).
5. Change of State:
- Melting: Solid to liquid.
- Freezing: Liquid to solid.
- Vaporization: Liquid to gas.
- Condensation: Gas to liquid.
6. Factors Affecting Change of State:
- Temperature
- Pressure
7. Evaporation:
- Conversion of liquid into vapour at any temperature below boiling point.
Factors affecting evaporation:
- Surface area
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Wind speed
