What is a self-directed learner?
According to the learning guide, a self-directed learner is someone who takes control of
their learning process and takes the initiative to learn. Self-directed learners recognize that they
control what, how, and when they learn themselves.
What are the essential aspects of self-directed learning?
Learning that is used by a self-directed learner is self-directed learning. Another way is
learning independently. There are two essential aspects of self-directed learning.
1. Setting learning goals is critical between a student and the advising instructor. It is
planning to achieve the highest possible grades, learn what is required to pass
exams, memorize facts, and spend time practicing from past exams.
2. Participating in learning activities such as discussion, peer assessment is one of the
essential aspects. It improves self-reflection and motivation.
What are your two biggest strengths as a student?
My two biggest strengths are good thinking skills and self-study.
How will these strengths help you become a self-directed learner?
Thinking skills make it easy to understand the courses. The self-study provides me to
study independently. These two strengths lead to the self-directed learner.
What are your two biggest weaknesses as a student?
I am poor in communication skills. Sometimes, I’m lazy.
3
How do these affect your readiness to be a self-directed learner?
In activities such as discussion, how I reflect on another peer is my problem. I
procrastinate reading long paragraphs. It delays self-directed learning.
Three strategies to become a more self-directed learner.
1. Planning or making time table for our goals ourselves.
2. Participating in learning activities independently.
3. Trying to understand how difficult the course is.
How will you hold yourself accountable for your growth as a learner?
I’ll hold myself accountable for my growth as a leaner using the three strategies. I make a
plan once a week. I have been taking part in activities actively. In this way, I hold myself
independently.
