Self-Control Board Game
Educator Guide
Self-control is the ability to stop and think before making a decision. While this seems like a simple
task, it actually involves many mental processes. This includes “hitting the pause button” in the
moment, learning to calm down when emotionally overwhelmed, resisting impulses, evaluating choices,
considering consequences for actions, and ultimately choosing the best decision.

While some students may need more support than others, all learners could use extra support and
practice with self-control. It is a skill that can be strengthened and improved over time.

While playing this game, kids will read self-control cards and discuss their answers. Each card
includes a question that encourages learners to think about self-control, managing emotions, and
making good decisions.

This game is intended to play in small groups. It is helpful to have at least one peer role model within
each group to support, give social guidance, and provide socially appropriate responses when others
might not know the correct answers.

Note that blank cards are included to make your own scenarios.

DIRECTIONS
Materials you will need for each group: Gameboard, 4 sets of cards, Dice, Gameboard pieces

1. Print out all game parts.

2. Laminate game boards. As an alternative, you can place in a sheet protector.
3. Gather dice and gameboard pieces, or use the ones included. To use the die provided, cut out
the die, fold on the edges, and glue. For the game board pieces, cut out the pieces around the
black lines. Fold on the dotted lines and use the bottom piece as a stand.
4. Cut out situation cards. Keep each card set separate. You can put in envelopes or plastic bags.
5. Arrange students in partners or small groups (2-4).
6. Pass out directions and materials.
7. Let students play! If they finish, have them start again!

In this game, you will be discussing self-control. Self-control is the skill that allows us to stop
and think before making a choice. It includes managing our emotions, staying calm, thinking
through consequences, and choosing the best decision in the moment. Self-control can look
different in different situations. For example, you might stop yourself from saying something
hurtful to a friend. You could talk out a disagreement with a friend instead of shouting. You
might also decide to raise your hand instead of shouting out in class. Those are all examples of
using self-control in the moment!

Learning strong skills for self-control is important because we all have thousands of decisions
we make every single day! When we use self-control, we know we can work towards making
the best decisions possible.

MATERIALS
Gameboard
4 sets of cards
Card holder
Dice
Gameboard pieces

DIRECTIONS
1. Place all game pieces at “Start”.
2. Make piles with cards and shuffle. Each type of situation should have its own pile. Place
the cards face down.
3. Have everyone roll the dice one time to see who starts the game. Highest number goes
first.
4. For your turn, roll the dice. Move your piece as many times as the dice reads. Use the
picture you land on to tell you what card to pick. If you land on the stars, pick any card
you want!
5. Read the card and discuss the answer.
6. After using a card, place it back on the bottom.
7. Have the next person take their turn. Continue until someone reaches finish.

Those are all examples of
using self-control in the moment!
