Data Communication & Computer Networks
What is Data Communication?
It is the process of exchanging data between two nodes (computers/devices) via
some form of transmission medium (wire or air).
The 5 Basic Components of Communication:
1. Sender: The device that sends the data.
2. Receiver: The device that receives the data.
3. Message: The actual data/information (Text, Image, Video).
4. Medium: The path (Guided like Cables or Unguided like Wi-Fi).
5. Protocol: The set of rules that govern data communication (e.g., HTTP, TCP/IP).

Transmission Media (The Path)
There are two main types of media used to carry signals:
Guided Media (Wired):
o Twisted Pair: Common telephone/LAN cables (Cat5, Cat6).
o Coaxial Cable: Used for Cable TV.
o Fiber Optic: Uses light pulses to send data. It is the fastest and most secure.
Unguided Media (Wireless):
o Radio Waves: Used for AM/FM radio and Wi-Fi.
o Microwaves: Used for satellite and line-of-sight communication.
o Infrared: Used in TV remotes (short range).

Types of Computer Networks (By Scale)
LAN (Local Area Network): Small area like a room, home, or your school lab.
High speed.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Connects a whole city (e.g., Cable TV
network in Khairpur).
WAN (Wide Area Network): Covers countries or continents. The Internet is the
largest WAN.
Network Topologies (The Layout)
Bus Topology: All computers connect to a single central cable (Bus). If the cable
breaks, the whole network goes down.
Star Topology: All computers connect to a central Hub or Switch. This is the
most common lab setup. If one computer fails, the rest keep working.
Ring Topology: Each computer is connected to two neighbors, forming a circle.
Mesh Topology: Every node is connected to every other node. Very expensive but
highly reliable.

Important Networking Devices
Modem: Modulates/Demodulates signals (Analog to Digital and vice versa).
Switch/Hub: Connects multiple devices in a LAN.
Router: Connects two different networks (e.g., your home LAN to the Internet).
NIC (Network Interface Card): The hardware inside your PC that allows it to
connect to a network.

IP Address: A unique numerical label assigned to each device on a network.
HTTP: HyperText Transfer Protocol (used for web browsing).
Bandwidth: The maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over a
connection in a given time.
Bluetooth: A wireless technology for exchanging data over very short distances
(Personal Area Network - PAN).
Standard Organizations in Networking
Standards ensure Interoperability (the ability of different systems to work
together).
1. ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
Role: The world’s largest developer of voluntary international standards.
Exam Fact: They created the OSI Model (Open Systems Interconnection), which
has 7 Layers. This is the most famous theoretical model for networking.
2. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)
Role: They set standards for local area networks and electricity.
Exam Fact: They are famous for the 802 series.
o 802.3: Ethernet (Wired LAN).
o 802.11: Wi-Fi (Wireless LAN). This is a very common MCQ question!
3. ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
Role: Coordinates standards in the United States but impacts global technology.
Exam Fact: Known for the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information
Interchange) code used to represent text in computers.
4. ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union)
Role: Specializes in information and communication technologies.
Exam Fact: They handle standards for telephony, telegraphy, and data
communication circuits (like V.90 modems).

5. IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)
Role: They develop and promote Internet standards.
Exam Fact: They are responsible for the TCP/IP protocol suite, which is the
actual "language" of the modern Internet.
The Concept of Protocols (Rules of the Road)
While organizations create the standards, Protocols are the actual rules applied
during communication.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol): The primary
protocol for the Internet.
HTTP/HTTPS: Used for transferring web pages.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol): Used for uploading/downloading files.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol): Used for sending emails.
DNS (Domain Name System): Converts website names
([Link] into IP addresses .
