Module 1 Part 3 - Factory Physics

The document discusses the uncertainties in demand forecasting and productive time in production systems, emphasizing the need to consider these factors in facility design. It introduces key parameters such as bottleneck rate, raw process time, and critical work in process (WIP) that are essential for understanding production lines. The definitions provided clarify the relationships between these parameters and their impact on maximizing throughput and minimizing cycle time.

SIME 6450 - Design of Production and Service Systems

Pedro Huebner | [Link]

Improving Our Scenario
• Demand is uncertain due to difficulty in forecasting and prediction.
- What is the probability of having enough capacity in a given week if demand is
normally distributed with mean 300 and standard deviation 25?

• Productive time is also uncertain and affected by many factors:

- Down time, scrap rates, setup times and sizes, productivity, etc…

We NEED to consider uncertainties and
variability in the design of facilities! PHYSICS

2
Basics of Factory Physics
• Allows us to examine fundamental relationships between the
parameters a production system. More info on Ch. 7 (Hopp & Spearman).
• Two key parameters describing an individual production line:
- Bottleneck rate
- Raw process time

• And a third that can be calculated from them:

- Critical WIP (work in process)

3
Definitions
• Bottleneck rate (rb):
- Production rate at the station having the highest long-term utilization
• Raw process time (T0):
- Sum of the long-term average process times of each workstation in the line

• Critical WIP (W0):

- WIP level at which the line achieves maximum throughput (that is, rb) with
minimum cycle time (that is, T0)
WIP = 7

a product routing not including end stock points. Crib or FGI
