The Human Skin (Detailed Notes)

Introduction

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It covers and protects the body, helps regulate
temperature, and allows us to sense our environment.

Structure of the Skin

1 Epidermis – Outer layer that provides protection and contains melanin.


2 Dermis – Middle layer containing blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, and hair follicles.
3 Hypodermis (Subcutaneous layer) – Inner layer made of fat and connective tissue for insulation
and cushioning.

Functions of the Skin

1 Protection – Acts as a barrier against pathogens and injury.

2 Temperature Regulation – Controls body temperature through sweating and blood flow.

3 Sensation – Contains receptors for touch, pain, heat, and cold.

4 Excretion – Removes waste products through sweat.

5 Vitamin D Production – Helps in the synthesis of Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.

Common Skin Conditions

1 Acne – Caused by blocked hair follicles.

2 Eczema – Causes inflammation and itching.

3 Psoriasis – Leads to red, scaly patches.

4 Sunburn – Damage caused by excessive UV exposure.

Care of the Skin

1 Maintain proper hygiene by regular bathing.

2 Eat a balanced diet and drink enough water.

3 Protect skin from excessive sun exposure.

4 Avoid harsh chemicals on the skin.

5 Keep skin moisturized.
