1. A barge of L= 70m , B=12m and D=6 m. The light and loaded drafts are 3, 4 m
respectively. Assuming the light weight and buoyancy are distributed uniformly over the
parallel body (40m) then the distribution decreasing linearly to zero load at the ends.
(Weight density(ρxg) =1 ton/m3 ). The dead weight is uniformly over 40m.
Draw curves of weight, buoyancy and load.
Calculate
a. Bending stress
c- Shear stress maximum bending moment.

2. A ship of L= 70m , B=12m and D=5 m. The light and loaded drafts are 4, 5 m
respectively. Assuming the 70% of light weight is distributed uniformly over the parallel
body (40m). (Weight density(ρxg) =1 ton/m3 ). The dead weight is uniformly over 20m.
Draw curves of weight, buoyancy and load.
a. Bending stress
b. Shear stress

NAM435 Plate bending/buckling
1) A rectangular plate with the following dimensions:
a =2m, b=1m and t=15mm Is loaded with a lateral pressure = 50 Kpa given that
the plate material has (E = 208000 MN/m2 and v = 0.3)
calculate the maximum deflection and the maximum stresses if:
•All edges are simply supported
• All edges are clamped

2) A panel of deck plating is 1 m length, 0.5 m width and 10 mm thickness has

yield stress of 250 MPa. In a certain cargo loading condition it is subjected to a
lateral pressure of 100 Kpa.
Will the plate undergo any surface yielding?

3) Find the load which if uniformly distributed will initiate yielding in a simply
supported square plate having a length of 75 cm and thickness of 10 mm, the
plate is constructed from mild teel having (E = 208 x 103 MN/m2, yield stress =
240 MN/m2).

4) A 2 m x 0.5 m stiffened panel is made of 8 mm thick mild steel plating, (E = 208

x 103 MN/m2, yield stress = 240 MN/m2). The stiffened panel must be capable of
supporting a uniform pressure load of 0.25 N/mm2 before it yields. The edges
of the panel are all simply supported. which of the following arrangements
would meet the requirements:
a) No stiffening
b) A single transverse beam at mid-length
c) Two equally spaced beams
d) A single longitudinal stiffener at mid-breadth

5) A rectangular panel whose dimensions are (a), (b) and thickness (t) is simply
supported along its four edges. If a = 2b, compare the total compressive stress
the panel will carry uniformly distributed along its long edges with the total
compressive stress it can carry uniformly distributed
along its short edges.

6) A panel of deck plating is 10 mm thick. It is subjected to a maximum hull girder

sagging stress of 150 Mpa. The transverse beams are spaces 2.5 m apart.
Given that the plate material has (E = 208 GPA and v = 0.3)
How far apart may the longitudinal be spaced to give a factor of safety of 2?
