Definition:

Severe acute respiratory


syndrome (SARS) is a
communicable viral disease ,
caused by a new strain of
coronavirus, which differs
considerably in genetic
structure from previously
recognized coronavirus.
Clinical Case definition of SARS
Causative agent
The causative agent for SARS is SARS-COV (Severeve Acute Respiratory
Syndrome Corona Virus.
History

SARS was reported in


Hong Kong, Singapore,
Vietnam, Taiwan and
Toronto. As of early
August 2003, about 8422
cases were reported to
the WHO from 30
countries with 916
fatalities
Incubation period

The incubation period has been estimated to be 2 to 7 days commonly


3 to 5 days.
Mode of transmission
• The primary mode of transmission is contact
of mucous membrane of eyes, nose or
mouth with respiratory droplets or formites.

• It is also transmitted by aerosol generating


procedures in hospitals.

• The virus is shed in stools but the role of


fecal oral transmission is unknown.

In the past no vaccine
was available for SARS-
COV. But now some
vaccines are available
for COV-2 and many
reaseaches are going

Treatment
The treatment used in 2003 was
• Ribavarin (400-600mg/d)
• Lopinavor/ritonavir (400mg/100mg)
• Interferon type 1
• IV immunoglobulins
• Systemic corticosteroids
