Theology | Annotations & Notetaking

Goal: To wrestle with a text, not just read it.


Wrestling = Generous & Critical Engagement + Internalization

Our Way of Proceeding


1. Scan the Text
Give the full text a brief scan, note any headings, sub-headings, etc. that may help guide your reading.

2. Read and Annotate


Slowly and deliberately read and annotate the text using margin annotations (see below)
Remember: Annotation isn’t for the teacher, it is for YOU
Therefore, it is NOT highlighting for the sake of highlighting

Margin Annotations

Left Margin Right Margin


Information from [Body of Text] Your thoughts, questions,
the teacher, lecture, etc connections, objections, etc.

Color Symbol Meaning

Red !! Thesis statement, main idea, key premise, important vocab


( highlight, too, but do so sparingly & only for this information)

Orange ?? Anything you find confusing.


Write a statement about your confusion
or a question for clarification in the margin.

Green Circle New Vocabulary (look up the definition & write it in the margin)

Blue ** Anything that connects to something we have studied, you have


learned (even in other classes), and/or with your life experience.

3. Summarize & Internalize | Choose one of the following


a. At the end of each page write a one sentence summary of that page, and at the end of the
document a 2-3 sentence summary of your thoughts about the text as a whole.
b. At the end of the document, write a 3-4 sentence summary of the text + a 2-3 sentence
summary of your thoughts about the text as a whole.
