CLIMATE CHANGE
CLIMATE CHANGE
• change in Earth’s climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to
human activities, which alters the composition of our atmosphere
• change maybe-gradual or rapid, long or short, partly or drastically
• Variation and periodical shift in weather conditions over space and
time- results in climate change- it can be local, regional or global
• caused due to rise in temperature - global warming
• According to IPCC research, Global temperature rise- 1℃ (0.8-
1.2℃)
• 2030-2052- may rise by 1.5℃
• CO2 - 410 ppm (280ppm)
• According to WHO, climate change- nearly 2,50,000 dies due to
increasing pollution related problems.
EVIDENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE
• Increase in Global temperature
• Decrease in snow covered area or glaciers
• Warming of Ocean water
• Rise in sea level
• Ocean acidification
• Extreme weather events
CAUSES
• NATURAL
• ANTHROPOGENIC
• Continental Drift- change of the
physical features of body and • Excessive emission of GHGs
land mass • Deforestation
• further alters pattern of wind • Excessive exploitation of Natural
and ocean current Resources
• Pollution due to Volcano • Excessive emission of carbon
dioxide
activities- outburst of gas and
dust.
• tiny droplets of sulphuric acid-
persist for several years
IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
• Increased risk of extreme weather events
• Increased risk of forest fires
• Increased risk of floods
• Increased risk of Droughts
• Increased risk of Diseases and illness
• Increased economic losses caused due to extreme weather events
• A rise in the sea levels
• The surge in Global Temperature
• A threat to the Ecosystem and wetlands
India's effort to counter climate change
• National Action Plan for Climate change
• Govt has launched the following programs to address climate change under
NAPCC:
1. National Solar Mission
2. National Enhanced energy efficiency mission
3. National Sustainable Habitat Mission
4. National Water Mission
5. National Mission for Sustainable the Himalayan Ecosystem
6. Green India Mission
7. National Mission for sustainable agriculture
8. National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change
