Class 9: Motion Notes
1. Motion and Rest
- Rest: An object is at rest if it does not change its position with respect to its surroundings.
- Motion: An object is in motion if it changes its position with respect to its surroundings.
- Motion and rest are relative terms, depending on the observer's frame of reference.
2. Types of Motion
1. Uniform Motion:
- The object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time.
- Example: A car moving at a constant speed on a straight road.
2. Non-Uniform Motion:
- The object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.
- Example: A car accelerating or decelerating.
3. Circular Motion:
- An object moves in a circular path.
- Example: A satellite orbiting the Earth.
4. Periodic Motion:
- Motion that repeats itself after a fixed interval of time.
- Example: Pendulum of a clock.
3. Distance and Displacement
- Distance:
- Total path length traveled by an object.
- Scalar quantity (only magnitude).
- Displacement:
- Shortest straight-line distance between the initial and final positions.
- Vector quantity (magnitude + direction).
4. Speed and Velocity
- Speed:
- The rate at which an object covers distance.
- Formula: Speed = Distance / Time
- Scalar quantity.
- Velocity:
- The rate of change of displacement.
- Formula: Velocity = Displacement / Time
- Vector quantity.
5. Acceleration
- The rate of change of velocity.
- Formula: Acceleration = Change in Velocity / Time
- SI Unit: m/s^2.
- Positive acceleration: Speeding up.
- Negative acceleration (deceleration): Slowing down.
6. Graphical Representation of Motion
1. Distance-Time Graph:
- Uniform motion: Straight line.
- Non-uniform motion: Curved line.
2. Velocity-Time Graph:
- Uniform velocity: Straight horizontal line.
- Acceleration: Sloped straight line.
- Area under the curve: Displacement.
7. Equations of Motion (for Uniform Acceleration)
1. v = u + at
- Final velocity (v), initial velocity (u), acceleration (a), time (t).
2. s = ut + 1/2 at^2
- Displacement (s).
3. v^2 = u^2 + 2as
- Relationship between velocities and displacement.
8. Uniform Circular Motion
- The motion of an object along a circular path with constant speed.
- Although speed is constant, the velocity changes due to the change in direction.
- Centripetal force is required to keep the object in circular motion.
9. Key Points
- Scalar quantities: Have only magnitude (e.g., distance, speed).
- Vector quantities: Have both magnitude and direction (e.g., displacement, velocity, acceleration).
