1. Constant Function
A constant function is defined by the equation 𝑓(𝑥)=𝑐 or 𝒚 = 𝒄
, where 𝑐 is a real number.
• Graph: A horizontal line parallel to the x-axis.
• Slope: The slope is always 0.
• Characteristics: Every input 𝑥 yields the same output
𝑓(𝑥)=3 is a horizontal line crossing the y-axis at (0,3)
2. Identity Function
The identity function is defined by the equation 𝑓(𝑥)=𝑥 or 𝒚 = 𝒙
.Graph: A diagonal line passing through the origin (0,0)
• Slope: The slope is exactly 1.
Every point on the graph has identical coordinates, such as (1,1), (2,2) and (-3,-3) etc
3. Linear Function
A general linear function is defined by the equation 𝑓(𝑥)=𝑚𝑥+c , where 𝑚 is the slope and c is
the y-intercept.
• Graph: A straight line that can be horizontal, upward-sloping, or downward-sloping.
• Slope (𝑚):
o If 𝑚>0 , the line slants upward from left to right.
o If 𝑚<0, the line slants downward from left to right.
o If 𝑚=0, the function becomes a constant function.
• Y-Intercept (c): The point (0, 𝑐)where the line crosses the y-axis.
