OVERVIEW OF ARVIND LIMITED

INTRODUCTION OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY

Around 5000BC, the Egyptians began to produce linen which was the first invention
of the textile industry. The first cotton mill in India was established in 1818 at Fort Gloster
near Kolkata but was a commercial failure.

The second cotton mill in India was established by KGN Daber in 1854 and was
named Bombay Spinning and Weaving Company. This mill is said to mark the true
foundation of the modern cotton industry in India on 17 May 2019. Jamsetji Tata is the father
of textile industry. 34Surat and Ahmedabad are known as textile city of India.

The textile industry is the industry responsible for converting raw material into a
finished product, and it includes textile developing, producing, manufacturing, and
distributing. There are two major categories of fabric in the industry: natural are those that
occur naturally and come from plants and animals.

The domestic apparel & textile industry in India contributed to 2% to the country's
GDP, 7% of industry output in value terms. India holds 4% share of the global trade in
textiles and apparel. The share of Textiles and apparel in overall export basket of India was
10.33% during 2021-22.

Indian textile and apparel industry is highly diversified with a wide range of segments
ranging from products of traditional handloom, handicrafts, wool, and silk products to the
organized textile industry in India.

The organized textile industry in India is characterized by the use of capital-intensive


technology for the mass production of textile products and includes spinning, weaving,
processing, and apparel manufacturing.

Arvind Limited (formerly Arvind Mill) is a textile manufacturing and
the flagship company of the Lalbhai Group. Arvind Mills starts a business for sarees. In1986
it is the first company in India bring globally accepted fabrics such as Denim yarn dyed
shirting fabrics & wrinkle free gabardines.

Its headquarters are in Naroda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, and it has units at Santej
(near Kalol). Arvind has reached 100 million meters of denim per year, becoming the fourth-
largest producer of denim in the world in 1991.

The company manufactures cotton shirting, denim, knits and bottom weight (khaki)
fabrics. It has also recently ventured into technical textiles with its Advanced Materials
Division in 2011. It is India's largest denim manufacturer.

Sanjay bhai Lalbhai is the current Chairman and managing director of Arvind and
Lalbhai Group. In the early 1980s, he led the 'Reno-vision' whereby the company brought
denim into the domestic market, thus starting the jeans revolution in India.

Today it retails its own brands like Flying Machine, Newport and Excalibur and
licensed international brands like Arrow, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein through its
nationwide retail network. Arvind also runs three clothing and accessories retail chains, the
Arvind Store, Unlimited and Mega mart, which stocks company brands.

Production Capacity

The company has 90 million meters per annum denim fabrics manufacturing capacity
at Naroda in Ahmedabad and a Rs. 1,000 crore integrated plant at Santej near Ahmedabad
with a capacity of 30 million meters per annum shirting fabric, 13 tonnes knits fabric and 2.4
million knit garments.

Social Development

 Education Program
Gyanda supports around 1000 Students to complete their basic
education. Gyanda is a unique supplementary education model designed for
primary, secondary and higher secondary school-going children studying in
municipal schools. It prevents these children from dropping out and helps
them complete their basic education from Standard V to XII, while focusing
on improving their academic performance and overall personality
development, leading them to become last generation in poverty.

 Health Program
Five Arvind Medical Centres operational across India providing medical services
under one roof. Arvind has established Medical Centres in association with Swasth
India Foundation to provide credible, affordable and quality primary healthcare to
the people, specifically benefiting the economical disadvantages sections of society.
Through a unique delivery model, our Medical Centres provide quality, affordable
primary healthcare including- doctor (consultation), diagnosis (pathological tests),
drug (strip packed quality medicines), dental care and daytime care when required.
