MAIN COMPONENTS
1. Main Operating Panel (MOP)
Located in Engine Control Room (ECR)
Main interface between operator and engine
Functions:
Start / Stop engine
Set RPM / load
Alarm and monitoring display
2. ⚡ Engine Interface Control Unit (EICU)
Receive the navigational input and passing it through the series of algorithm such as maneuver
handle, remote control system, alarm system and safety system and after checking that’s
everything is ok then this process signal will be sent to ECU
EICU receive its command from bridge/ECR and process this data through its interface and then
the processed signal is provided to ecu
Is to send the process signal by passing the raw speed set point means it is taking command
from active stations
3. 🧠 Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Central processing unit of ECS
Functions:
Receives input signals (speed, load, pressure, temp)
Calculates:
o Fuel index
o Injection timing
o Engine load control
Sends commands to CCU / ACU
👉 Think of ECU as the decision maker
4. Local Operating Panel (LOP)
Installed near the engine (local control position)
Functions:
Local start/stop of engine
Emergency operation
Backup control if ECR fails
👉 Used during:
Maintenance
Emergency situations
5. 🔩 Cylinder Control Unit (CCU)
One CCU per cylinder
Functions:
Controls:
o Fuel injection timing & quantity
o Exhaust valve operation (depending on engine type)
Receives command from ECU
Sends feedback signals
👉 Very important for:
Cylinder balancing
Precise control
6. 🔧 Auxiliary Control Unit (ACU)
Handles supporting systems
Functions:
Controls:
o Starting air system
o Fuel oil system
o Lubrication system
o Safety interlocks
Ensures proper sequence during:
o Starting
o Running
o Shutdown
🔄 SIMPLE CONTROL FLOW
1. Operator sets command (MOP / Bridge)
2. Signal goes to EICU
3. ECU processes data
4. Commands sent to:
o CCU → cylinder operation
o ACU → auxiliary systems
5. Feedback from sensors returns to ECU
6. Continuous adjustment
🎯 INTERVIEW ANSWER (SHORT VERSION)
“The main engine control system consists of MOP, EICU, ECU, LOP, CCU, and ACU. The MOP is the
operator interface, EICU handles communication, ECU is the main processing unit, CCU controls each
cylinder, ACU controls auxiliary systems, and LOP provides local control. These units work together to
control, monitor, and protect the engine.”
