Tektronix’ complete Unified Assurance (UA) solution for IP multi-service
networks monitors the quality of network elements and management functions
through near real-time indications of SIP, RTP, H.248, and RTCP network
service performance degradation. This monitoring capability is made possible
through the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that capture leg-based
node-to-node performance of multimedia over IP services.

Application Description
You can access these applications from the left frame of the Unified Assurance

The GeoProbe | APM product architecture uses non-correlated Packet Detail
Records (PDRs) that are streamed from the GeoProbe product to a mediation
component, which are then filtered and processed.
The GeoProbe’s alarm monitoring system collects the PDRs and sends the
data to the GeoProbe | APM server where alarm aggregators process the data
in real time. You can view the alarm information using a Web browser from any
computer.

The GeoProbe | APM server is a UNIX product that performs as a central file
server for the product. This server is responsible for loading PDRs into the
GeoProbe | APM database and then providing data to multi-dimensional cubes
and related reporting features. The GeoProbe | APM applications reside on a
Sun Microsystems Sun Fire or equivalent server. Several server configurations
are available, depending on processing requirements.
Figure 2.3 shows an example of a GeoProbe | APM server, in this case a Sun

The GeoProbe | APM’s Planning (Network Analysis) application provides
historical data that allows you to audit, baseline, quantify, and analyze
performance issues inside your network. The GeoProbe | APM product
collects specific protocol data and stores it into predefined OLAP data cubes
that function as a storage area. This allows you access to report queries more
efficiently and quickly. You can analyze any combination of dimensions and
measures on demand, and view the results as a table or graph.
By using this application of the GeoProbe | APM product, you can share
information between your network operations and management personnel.
The report data enables you to resolve network issues, which can prevent lost
revenues and commitment disputes.

Measure Description
Call Control
Call Attempts This measure indicates the total number of
SIP/H.248 Output Hybrid Data Records (OHDRs)
that are SIP Invite for the selected dimensions
which contain a SIP Invite without a response
code of 300.
Call Answers This measure indicates the number of calls
answered where the total number of SIP/H.248
OHDRs with a SIP/H.248 Invite and call answered
were present for the selected dimensions.
Call Failures This measure indicates the number of OHDR calls
with SIP/H.248 Invite where SIP response was
mapped to user defined failed release causes.
Minutes Of Use (MOU) This measure indicates the MOU from SIP/H.248
OHDR that are SIP/H.248 Invite call answer time
to call terminated time.
Abnormal Releases This measure defines Abnormal Release Calls to
mapped user defined abnormal release causes.
NER This measure is defined as Call Answers plus Not
Answered Calls which have Response Codes that
are configured as being Net Effective, divided by
Call Attempts times 100 that are SIP/H.248
Invites.
ASR This measure defines Answered Calls divided by
Call Attempts times 100 that are SIP/H.248
Invites.
Average MOU Per This measure defines SIP/H.248 Invites and must
Source and Destination be calculated on a Node basis dividing the total
IPs MOU by the number of IP addresses defined for
the gateway. For example, a Node with
host range [Link] through [Link] and a total of
three hosts with a total of 1200 MOU would have
an average MOU of 400.

You can use the Create an Alarm (GeoProbe | APM) page to configure custom
alarms based on the needs and preferences of your company. Alarm
configurations are system-wide and anyone who has the correct privileges can
edit or delete any alarm another user creates. Usually, many system alarm
configurations are defined, and then grouped into sets of Alarm Groups. Each

configuration exists, but is not part of a group or profile, the Unified Assurance
system will not generate the alarms.
Perform the following procedure that explains the necessary steps for
configuring alarms.
Step Action
1. From the Unified Assurance Home page, click the Alarm Group
Configuration link to open the Alarm Configuration page.
3. Select the alarm definition you want to use for this alarm from the
Alarm Definition options menu.
4. Type the name you want to use for this alarm in the Name field.

The User Configuration application allows you to add new user accounts,
individual or groups, and manage access levels through the granting of
privileges for each user or group account. User or group accounts provide
individual users or groups with access to the various Unified Assurance

job function or task the user performs. For example, if a user’s job function or
task is system administration, that user can be assigned to the system

The GeoProbe | APM (Advanced Performance Monitoring Application)
application uses a Web portal application and an Online Analytical Processing
(OLAP) reporting tool that enables you to analyze, organize, and distribute the
report data using a standard Web browser. Cognos’ Upfront application is the
Web portal application that allows you to organize and manage report data.
Cognos’ PowerPlay Web explorer is the OLAP reporting environment that
enables you to explore the GeoProbe | APM multi-dimensional cubes.
The following sections in this chapter that provide you with information and
procedures for the OLAP third-party software application are:

The GeoProbe | APM Network Planning application uses Cognos’ Upfront
application that functions as a Web portal. You use Upfront to view, find,
organize, and share your report data on the Web.
When you click the Network Planning application link from the Unified
Assurance Home page (see Figure 1.2), the Upfront Logon Web page
appears, allowing you to log on to the GeoProbe | APM Planning: Network
Analysis application (see Figure A.1).

The GeoProbe | APM Network Planning application uses the Cognos
PowerPlay Web explorer product as a third-party reporting and analysis
application. This Cognos product allows you to generate and view historical
call data, enabling you to analyze different dimensions of the data.
You can view and explore report data by using your Web browser with the
Cognos PowerPlay Web explorer application. When you enter a specific cube
entry point from the Cognos Upfront Web page, Cognos’ PowerPlay Web
