VERB TENSES

(Simple present & present continuous)


SIMPLE PRESENT
Used for facts, habits, routines, and general truths. You use Simple Present when the
action is:
Regular / repeated
 I drink coffee every morning.
A habit
 She goes to the gym twice a week.
A fact or general truth
 Water boils at 100°C.
A permanent situation
 He lives in Casablanca.
ASSERTIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE INTERROGATIVE NEGATIVE
I, you, Subject + verb Subject + do not Do+ subject+verb….+? Do + Not (don’t) +
we, (don’t) + verb subject+verb…+?
they EX: I eat, You read, EX: do you know?
We work, They EX: I don’t eat… EX: do you know?

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
used to express an action taking place at the time of speaking.
 she is writing a letter, right now.
ASSERTIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE INTERROGATIVE NEGATIVE
All Subject + (to be) + Subject + (to be) + (to be) + subject + verb+ing? (to be) +subject + not + verb
subjects verb + ing not + verb + ing + ing?
EX:
EX: I am looking, EX: I am not looking Are you working? EX:

Important tip 1: verbs that end with s, ss, sh, ch, x, o, use es instead of s for the subjects he, she and it.
 Examples: kiss → he kisses, pass → she passes , wash → it washes, fix → he fixes, go → he goes, do →she does.
Important tip 2: verbs that end with a consonant + y use ies, instead of s for the subjects he, she and it.
 Examples: study → he studies, try → she tries , carry → he carries
