HOW STUDENTS RELEASE THEIR FRUSTRATION
Frustration is an emotion or feeling that occurs when we are unable to satisfy our
needs or when we find barriers and hurdles in achieving a goal which we have
set for ourselves. It normally appears whenever some situation goes beyond our
control and we feel that the things are not going in our favor or are not coming
out the way we want them to be. No matter how hard we try we do not seem to
find any way to regain control over a particular situation. As a result of which we
become angry, hopeless, annoyed, tensed, irritated, dissatisfied, disappointed
and depressed. All these things lead to frustration. Thus we can see many
people belonging to various age groups and professions get frustrated in some
critical situations.
Likewise students often fell in state of frustration whenever they find themselves
unable to overcome a particular issue or issues related to their studies. First of all
students become frustrated when they are unable to cover the whole syllabus
before the examination or when they try to study but find it very difficult to
concentrate. Secondly it also happens when they have set high goals for
themselves but can’t achieve them due to any reason. Moreover when students
don’t get good marks after studying very hard they feel disappointment. In such a
situation students start comparing themselves with other students who get good
marks without putting in much effort. They think that there is some kind of
deficiency in them and start losing hope. This negative thinking and attitude of
theirs result in frustration. In addition to this, frustration may occur to those
students whose skills, abilities and capabilities are not appreciated by the
teachers and parents. Finally frustration may arise if the efforts of the students
are degraded. In short, when students find themselves in a problematic situation,
which is very difficult for them to cope, they get frustrated
Students should find means and ways to release their frustration. If they don’t,
this psychological illness will convert into physiological illness and a point will
come when they lose every hope and just start hating them and this world. God
has bestowed upon human beings a variety of noble characteristics. He has
given him the ability to get knowledge and provided him with the power of
thinking and problem solving. Whenever a human being is encountered with
some sort of problem, he/she tries to overcome it utilizing his/her best abilities.
So the students react to their frustration in different ways to release it. This
release of frustration can be consciously or unconsciously, can be in a positive or
a negative way depending on one’s mental level.
In an unconscious effort to release the frustration, students react in many ways.
Firstly some students become harsh in their behavior and it seems that they are
ready to quarrel with everyone, especially at home. They start yelling and
misbehaving with their elders and pour all their anger and frustration on the little
ones. Secondly, some go beyond and start breaking home items or throwing
them here and there or even start beating youngsters. Moreover, some may shut
them in their rooms, refuse to eat and talk with anyone and start weeping. In
addition to this, many students who fail in examinations, start blaming their
teachers and use abusive language. Another way adopted by students to release
frustration is remaining absent from their regular classes, making noise and
disturbance during lectures or not doing their homework. In practical life a
student uses one or multiple ways thus trying unconsciously to release the
frustration but factually it does not release the frustration, it enhance it adversely.
In doing so students think that they are regaining the lost control over a particular
situation but in reality they are making it more complicated and difficult for them.
There are some students who adopt very negative and unhealthy ways to
release frustration. They indulge themselves in anti social activities. When they
do not get what they want using the right path they choose the wrong path. They
try to achieve the desirable things either by hook or by crook. They may start
cheating or to a bigger extent may start stealing the examination papers. Some
students damage the institution building and some may start fighting with their
fellow students or other members of the staff. They may form a gang and
threaten other students and teachers to act according to them. Furthermore
when they do not find any way or mean to get out of a particular situation; they
start smoking, drinking and using drugs to reduce their tension and frustration.
These are all those things which at first provide relief and feeling of relaxation to
their users but in the long run adversely affect the mental and physical well being
of human beings.
Yet there are many conscious and positive ways to release the frustration. Firstly,
any recreational activity like watching movies, cartoons, dramas, matches and
reality shows on television, going to cinemas or theatres, playing games, reading
interesting books, long walks, outing with friends and cousins, Internet browsing
& chatting, listening to music, sending/receiving SMS etc reduces frustration.
Secondly, some students release it by studying harder. They keep themselves
busy with books and school work. In addition to this students play different
games and sports like cricket, hockey, football etc and reduce their frustration by
hitting the ball harder. Moreover they engage themselves in tough exercises like
jogging, swimming and boxing to overcome frustration. Finally, many students
play violent and aggressive games and release their frustration on the characters
of the game. Almost all of the conscious ways provide temporary release of
frustration but if these are adopted in excess, they can cause more frustration.
Student, being a human being is best creature of the creator, so he\she should
try to use the brain and release the frustration in a conscious, positive and
healthy way. It can work if adopted in appropriate limits. Moreover, prevention is
better than cure. Avoidance of frustration is better than the efforts of its removal.
Students can minimize the chances by hard working and regularity in their
studies. The motive of a student must be “NO TIME TO WASTE”. Another
important thing is that students should set their goals keeping their abilities and
capabilities in mind. Frustration occurs when students try to chew more than they
can swallow. But we must realize that frustration cannot be completely
eliminated. So whenever a student undergoes any state of frustration, he/she
must act smartly and use some conscious and positive effort for its release.
