Lecture (1) - Examples

The document provides examples related to power systems, including calculations for reactance diagrams and per-unit (p.u.) system analysis for various components such as generators, motors, and transformers. It details the parameters for a transmission line and a transformer, along with specific load conditions to determine actual currents in both high and low-voltage windings. The examples illustrate the application of per-unit system concepts in electrical engineering.

Example (1)
For the power system shown in the figure, if the
transmission line (T.L.) length is 50 km and the
reactance per unit length is 0.75 ohm/km, choose the
base voltage of 161 kV and the base power of 100
MVA.
• Draw the reactance diagram with each element • Generator (G): 100 MVA, 24 kV, X = 0.15 p.u.
reactance marked in p.u. • Motor (M): 50 MVA, 13.2 kV, X = 0.2 p.u.
• Compute the reactance in per unit for system • Transformer 1 (T1): 150 MVA, 24/161 kV, X = 0.1 p.u.
elements. • Transformer 2 (T2): 100 MVA, 168/14.4 kV, X = 0.08
p.u.
• Transmission Line (TL): 50 km, reactance per unit
length = 0.75 ohm/km.

Example (2)
A transformer is rated 75 MVA, 345/138 kV, with an impedance of 0.1 p.u..
(a)The transformer, under certain load conditions, carries 0.6 p.u. of current. What is the actual
current in:
• The high-voltage winding?
• The low-voltage winding?
(b)The low-voltage terminals of the transformer are short-circuited, and 0.22 p.u. voltage is
applied to the high-voltage winding.
Determine the resulting currents in:
• The high-voltage winding
• The low-voltage winding
Express each current in both per-unit (p.u.) and Amperes (A).
