Tutorial Questions-2
1. The distance between conductors of a single-phase line is 3.1 m. Each of its conductors
is composed of six strands symmetrically placed around one center strand so that there
are seven equal strands. The diameter of each strand is 0.254 cm. Show that geometric
mean radius or GMR Ds of each conductor is 2.177 times the radius of each strand. Find
the inductance of the line in mH/km. (Remark: Read about ‘strands’)
2. A three-phase line is designed with equilateral spacing of 5 m. It is decided to build
the line with horizontal spacing (D13 = 2D12 = 2D23 ). The conductors are transposed.
What should be the spacing between adjacent conductors in order to obtain the same
inductance as original design? Find L in mH/km and Xl in ohm/km at 50-Hz system
frequency. The diameter of conductor is 0.48 cm.
3. A 50-Hz three-phase line composed of one ACSR Bluejay conductor has flat horizontal
spacing of 11 m between adjacent conductors. Compare the inductive reactance in ohms
per km per phase of this line with that of a line with two-conductor bundle of ACSR
26/7 conductors having the same total cross-sectional area of single-conductor aluminium
line and 11-m spacing measured from the center of the bundles. The spacing between
conductors in the bundle is 40 cm. The diameter of ACSR Bluejay is 3.19786 cm. (Re-
marks: Read about bundle conductor and types of conductors. Aluminium conductor
steel-reinforced (ACSR) conductors are typically used in overhead power transmission
lines.)
4. Each conductor of the bundled-conductor line shown in Fig. 1 is ACSR, 1,272,000-cmil
Pheasant. Find the inductive reactance in ohms per kilometer per phase for d= 45 cm.
Also, find the per-unit series reactance of the line, if its length is 160 km and the base is 100
MVA, 345 kV, 50-Hz. The diameter Dr = 1.420368 cm, 1 cmil = (π/4)∗6.4516∗10−6 cm2 .

5. Find the capacitive suceptance per km of a single-phase line operating at 50-Hz. The
conductor is Partridge, and spacing is 6.0 m between centers. (Diameter= 0.0163 m)
6. Calculate the capacitive reactance in ohm-kilometer of a bundled 50 Hz three-phase line
having three ACSR Rail conductors per bundle with 45 cm between conductors of the
bundle. The spacing between bundle centers is 9, 9, and 18 m. The diameter of ACSR
Rail is 2.9591 cm.

7. The 50-Hz capacitive reactance to neutral of solid conductor, which is one conductor of
a single-phase line with 2 m spacing, is 196.1 kΩ-km. What value of reactance would be
specified in a table listing the capacitive reactance in ohm-km to neutral of the conductor
at 0.3-m spacing for 20 Hz? What is the cross-sectional area of the conductor in m2 ?
8. A three-phase 50-Hz transmission line has its conductors arranged in a triangular forma-
tion so that two of the distances between conductors are 8 m and the third is 12 m. The
conductors are ASCR Osprey. Determine the capacitance to neutral in microfarads per
km and capacitive reactance to neutral in ohm-km. If the line is 150 km long, find the
capacitance to neutral in Farad and capacitive reactance of the line in Ω. The diameter
of ACSR Osprey is 2.23266 cm.
9. Six conductors of ACSR Drake constitute a 50-Hz Double-circuit three-phase line arranged
as shown in Fig.2. The vertical spacing is 5 m; the longer horizontal distance is 10 m;
and the shorter horizontal distances are 8 m. The diameter of ACSR Drake is 2.81432
cm. Find
a. The inductance per phase (in H/km) and the inductive reactance (in Ω/km).
b. The capacitive reactance to neutral (in Ω.km) and the charging current in A/km per
phase and per conductor at 138 kV.
