Often, instead of simply describing something, you may want to compare it with something else. There are three
degrees, or forms, of adjectives and adverbs that are used to modify and make comparisons. Most adjectives and
adverbs have different forms to show degrees of comparison.
There are three degrees of comparison
1. Positive [Link] [Link]
Things to remember:
For most one- and two-syllable modifiers, add –er to form the comparative degree and –est to form the superlative
degree.
In cases when adding –er and –est to one- and two-syllable modifiers would sound awkward, use more and most to
form the comparative and superlative degrees.
For adverbs ending in –ly and for all modifiers with three or more syllables, use more and most to form the
comparative and superlative degrees.

Likes be fond of love enjoy adore
Dislikes can't stand hate don't/doesn't mind be tired of
Like + Noun: I like chocolate.
Like + Verb-ing: I like reading books.
A. like, love, hate - can't bear enjoy, dislike, mind - can't stand
These verbs and expressions all mean 'like' or 'not like'. They are often followed by ~ing:
* Ann hates flying.
* Why do you dislike living here?
* I don't like people shouting at me. (= I don't like being shouted at.)
B. Like
You can say 'I like doing something' or 'I like to do something'. Often it doesn't matter which you use, so you can
say:
* I like getting up early. or I like to get up early.
In British English, there is sometimes a difference between 'I like doing' and 'I like to do'.
'I like doing something' means 'I enjoy it':
* Do you like cooking? (= do you enjoy it?)
* I like living here. (= I enjoy it)
'I like to do something' means 'I think it is good or right + ( ) do it':
* I like to clean the kitchen as often as possible. (This doesn't mean that I enjoy it; it means that I think it is a good
thing to do.)

The Ant and the Dove
One hot day, an ant was searching for some water. After walking round for some time, she came to a spring. She
had to climb up a blade grass to reach the spring. While making her way up, she slipped and fell into the water.
When the dove saw that the ant was in trouble, it quickly plucked leaf and dropped it into the water near the
struggling ant. The ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up onto it. Soon, the leaf drifted to dry ground, and the ant
jumped out. She was safe at last.
Just at that time, a hunter nearby was about to throw his net over the dove, hoping to trap it.

Neutrality Day of our country.
On December 12, 1995 the UN General Assembly Resolution “Permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan” was adopted
with the unanimous support of 185 countries of the world.
The peaceful foreign and domestic policy of the President of Turkmenistan promotes the increase of the
country`s international prestige all over the world.
Turkmenistan lives in peace with all its neighbors. The bridge of friendliness between neighbors, tribes and
nations means an end to wars. The policy “open doors” and positive neutrality has already brought us world fame. We
establish bilateral friendly relations with Iran, Russia, china, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Ukraine and other countries.
Our aim is to build a democratic secular state in our native Turkmenistan, to join the group of most advanced
nations and to achieve complete independence in all spheres.
This day is celebrated in Turkmenistan as the national holiday — the Day of Neutrality.
According to the Resolution of the General Assembly of the UN the status of Turkmenistan as a permanent neutral
state was fixed on the level of national legislation on the 27th of November, 1995 by the highest legislative body -
Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan.
Turkmenistan is a member of the UN and recognizes priority of the UN in the solution of any issues of its
competence. The status of Neutrality gave particular dynamics to the interactions between States. Neutral state means
the state of not supporting or helping either side in a conflict, disagreement during the war. On this day the city streets
are decorated with national flags, slogans and posters. Conferences, seminars, meetings devoted to the neutrality of
Turkmenistan are held all over the country.

Thank you for your letter. I have been just great. It is almost Christmas time.
I love holidays and presents!
Have I told you about holidays in Great Britain?
There are a few holidays in our country. They are, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter, May Day, Christmas and
Boxing Day. The most famous one is Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present.
They want to say "Thank you" for British help in the World War II. It is a big Christmas tree and it stands in
Trafalgar Square. Thousands of people come to look at it.
At home, we decorated Christmas tree together as a family. We hang mistletoe over the door. Many people believe
that mistletoes bring good luck. My parents put presents into stockings or arrange larger ones around the
Christmas tree. We open our presents in the morning of 25 December.
Most important meal on December 25th is Christmas dinner. Christmas dinner is roast turkey with carrots,
potatoes, peas and Brussels sprouts. After the turkey, there is Christmas pudding.
For British children Christmas means pantomimes, too. The pantomime is
a traditional Christmas show at the stocking - for example: "Puss in Boots", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella"
and "Little Red Riding Hood".
On Christmas Day at three о 'clock in the afternoon, the Queen makes a speech on radio and TV. It is ten minutes
long. Everyone gathers in front of TV. I hope you learned something new! Write soon.

The approaching holiday — the New Year’s Day is felt in everything. We feel it in the frosty morning air the
mountain peaks slightly covered with first snow, bright decoration on the beautiful New Year’s trees in the Turkmen
capital and other towns and villages throughout our country. Numerous shops and bazaars where everyone can buy

which has sprung up not far from it. Ayazbaba (Grandfather Frost) with the long beard and his granddaughter

Look before You Leap
Once a fox was chased by a tiger in a forest. He ran as fast as he could in order to save his life. But suddenly, he fell
into a well which was covered with shrubs that obstructed his vision, as he was running. He could not come out of the
well. Now the fox knew that death had been waiting for him in that well. He was sad.

anywhere? So I've come here to enjoy the sweet water of this well. The water is so tasted that I do not even feel
hungry. Why don't you join me, friend? Just jump into the well, and give me a pleasant company! "
The foolish goat believed the fox and agreed to join her friend. A she jumped, the clever fox placed one of his feet
on her horn and escape from the well. Now the poor goat was inside the well. She cried, "Friend why do you leave me
here alone? Come back."
The fox said, "Friend, you should have looked before you had leaped into the well to see if it was possible for you
