Rationale and Strategic Execution
1. Situation Diagnosis: Lack of Strategic Focus
Delta/Signal’s core problem was not capability, it was direction. The firm had spread itself across
too many products and customer segments without a clear value proposition. This “everything for
everyone” approach diluted its strengths, particularly in R&D, and translated into weak margins,
declining market share, and inconsistent financial performance.
2. Strategic Choice: Why Product Innovation in Luxury
Segment
We chose to focus on the luxury segment with a Product Innovation strategy. Entering the
economy segment would have meant competing on cost against players already optimized for scale
and efficiency, a race we were unlikely to win. In contrast, the luxury segment
rewards performance, technology, and integration, areas where Delta/Signal already had a
natural edge. This allowed us to shift from being a generic supplier to becoming a differentiated
innovation partner, capable of commanding premium pricing and building long-term OEM
relationships.
3. What We Focused On: Building the Right Drivers First
Our execution followed a clear sequence. We started by strengthening the innovation engine,
rather than chasing short-term financial improvements. This meant investing in R&D tools,
workforce capability, and structured decision-making to ensure that innovation efforts were not just
frequent, but effective. Once the pipeline began to strengthen, we shifted attention
toward customer-side outcomes, increasing product trials, improving innovation perception, and
deepening partnerships with luxury OEMs. Only after these leading indicators started moving did
we introduce efficiency levers to improve margins and asset productivity.
4. Alignment with Balanced Scorecard: From Inputs to
Outcomes
The Balanced Scorecard provided the backbone for our execution. At the base, Learning &
Growth (OL-2, OL-15, OL-16) ensured that the R&D function was aligned, equipped, and
capable. These capabilities directly fed into Internal Processes (OP-5, OP-12, OP-14), where we
improved new product development, leveraged external technologies, and focused on high-
performance outputs.
These process improvements translated into Customer outcomes (OC-6, OC-11, OC-13, OC-9),
higher product trials, stronger innovation perception, and deeper OEM partnerships. These, in turn,
drove Financial results (OF-9, OF-6, OF-7) through higher sales, better margins, and improved
asset utilization. The strength of our approach lay in maintaining this cause-and-effect discipline
rather than treating objectives in isolation.

5. Initiative Design: Ensuring Strong Fit with Objectives
A key learning during execution was that performance depended not just on selecting initiatives, but
on ensuring a tight initiative–objective fit. Early on, we invested in capability-building initiatives
such as leading-edge R&D technologies, licensing, and process improvements. As the strategy
matured, we shifted toward customer integration initiatives like R&D partnerships and feedback
systems to translate innovation into revenue.
In the later rounds, we narrowed our portfolio, cutting non-essential initiatives and focusing only on
those directly impacting our selected objectives. This shift significantly improved our Balanced
Scorecard performance and exit value, as resources were concentrated on high-impact drivers rather
than dispersed across unrelated initiatives.
6. Outcome: From Fragmentation to Focused Value Creation
By making a clear
choice and
consistently aligning
our objectives,
initiatives, and
investments, we were
able to transform
Delta/Signal from a
fragmented supplier
into a focused,
innovation- led player
in the luxury segment.
The strategy worked
because it respected a
simple logic build
capabilities, convert
them into customer
value, and then
extract financial
returns without
breaking the chain at
any stage.
