Reproduction is a biological process by which an
organism reproduces an offspring that is biologically
similar to the organism. Reproduction enables and
ensures the continuity of species, generation after
generation. It is the main feature of life on earth.
There are two types of reproduction namely :
1. Asexual 2. Sexual reproduction
exual Reproduction
1. Asexual reproduction refers to the type of
reproduction in which only a single organism gives rise
to a new individual.”
E.g. binary fission, budding, fragmentation and
sporogenesis .
1. Binary Fission: In this, the cell splits into two each
cell carrying a copy of the DNA from the parent cell.
For eg., amoeba.
2. Budding: In this, a small bud-like outgrowth gives
rise to a new individual. The outgrowth remains
attached to the organism until it is fully grown. It
detaches itself and lives as an individual organism. For
eg., hydra
[Link]: In this, the parent organism splits
into several parts and each part grows into a new
individual. For eg., Planaria
4. Sporogenesis: In this type of reproduction, a new
organism grows from the spores. These can be created
without fertilization and can spread through wind and
animals.
Sexual Reproduction
This is a type of reproduction that involves the
production of an offspring by the fusion of male and
female gametes.
Humans and other multicellular organisms reproduce
through sexual reproduction.
Fish Reproductive System:
Fish reproduce through a variety of methods, and their
reproductive strategies can vary based on species and
environmental conditions.
TYPES OF REPRODUCTION IN FISH
The main types of reproduction in fish are:
1. Oviparous Reproduction:
2. viviparous reproduction.
3. Ovoviviparous
1. Oviparous reproduction: Most fish species are
oviparous and lay eggs.
- Process:
- The Females release eggs into the water.
- Males release sperm (milt) to fertilize the eggs
externally.
- Fertilized eggs develop in the water, often
attaching to surfaces or floating.
- Once hatched, the offspring (larvae) are on their
own.
2. Viviparous Reproduction: Some fish give birth to live
offspring.
- Process:
- Fertilization occurs internally, with males
transferring sperm to females through specialized
structures.
- Embryos develop within the female's body.
- Offspring are born in a more advanced state,
capable of swimming and feeding independently.
3. Ovoviviparous Reproduction: Eggs develop inside the
female's body, but hatching occurs internally.
- Process:
- Females produce eggs that remain inside the body
until hatching.
- The developing embryos are nourished by the egg
yolk.
- Live offspring are born.
The reproductive system in fish includes:
Female Reproductive System:
- Ovaries: produce eggs and are usually paired and
symmetrical
- Oviducts: transport eggs
- Pseudo-copulatory papilla: present in some species
*Male Reproductive System:*
- Testes: produce sperm
- Sperm duct: transport sperm
- Vas deferens: stores sperm in
- Seminal vesicle: stores sperm in some species
*Reproduction Process:*
- Most fish lay eggs that are fertilized outside of the
body.
Males produce sperm, usually as a milky white
substance called milt. Females have ovaries that
produce eggs, which pass through the ovaries to the
urogenital opening and outside
- Some fish have live young, while others lay eggs that
develop outside the body. Fertilization occurs when
the sperm from the male meets the egg from the
[Link] fertilized egg develops into a larva, which
hatches from the egg and grows into an adult fish
hTe male Agama lizard has two testes which are
located in the abdomen . The right testis is slightly
higher in position than the left testis . From the testes ,
the sperms are conducted to tiny tubes known as Vasa
deferentia which lead them to the coiled epididymis
found along the outer edge of the testis .
The sperm cells are finally passed on to the two
protrusible penis . Each penis is hollow and cylindrical
and both release sperms into the female for internal
fertilisation .
In the female reproductive system ,the two ovaries are
located in the abdomen in the same position as the
testes in the male . The eggs are released into the
abdominal space ; and by the action of some cilia , the
eggs are moved into the oviduct . Albumen and shell
are deposited on the eggs as they move down the
oviduct .
The oviduct opens at the posterior end into the cloaca
near the openings of the ureters . As mating between
the male and female lizard takes place , fertilisation
takes place internally .
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM IN BIRDS
The male reproductive system of domestic fowl
consists of two large and ovoid testes which are
attached to the outer edges of the kidneys . From each
testis , a vas deferens leads towards the hind end ,
alongside the ureter .
Birds generally do not have penis . In many birds , the
sperm ducts expand at their posterior ends to form
seminal vesicles . Sperms accumulate here during
copulation and are transferred from the male to the
female when their cloacas come in contact .
