HARDWARE vs SOFTWARE
Introduction:
Computers and digital devices are a part of our everyday lives, but they work only because of two key
components: hardware and software. Both are essential for a computer system to function, yet they are
very different in nature and purpose.
Hardware:
Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer or device — the components you can see
and touch.
It performs the actual tasks like input, processing, output, and storage, but cannot work alone
without software.
1. Internal Hardware:
Internal hardware refers to components located inside the computer case.
These parts are essential for the computer’s performance and processing.
Examples: Central Processing Unit (CPU), motherboard, RAM (memory), hard drive, graphics
card.
2. External Hardware:
External hardware, also known as peripheral devices, are outside the main computer unit and
are used to input, output, or store data.
They are connected to the computer through ports or wirelessly.
Examples: Keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, speakers, external hard drive.
Software:
Software is the set of programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
It is non-physical and cannot be touched — it exists digitally.
3. Application Software:
Application software is a type of software designed to help users perform specific tasks.
It is used after the system software has loaded and runs on top of the operating system.
Examples: Microsoft Word (for writing), Google Chrome (for browsing), Photoshop (for editing
images), PowerPoint (for presentations).
4. System Software:
System software manages and controls the basic operations of the computer.
It acts as a bridge between the hardware and user, and is essential for running application
software.
Examples: Operating System (e.g. Windows, macOS, Linux), device drivers, utility programs like
antivirus or disk management tools.
